Collaboration of a New Generation
Young Money is an American record label that was founded by rapper Lil' Wayne in 200. The label represents a group of young hip hop and rap artists, representing them each individually, and as a collaboration of artists. The label became a way for the younger generation of musicians in these genres to promote one another and form partnerships as needed.
In 2007, Lil Wayne stepped down at president to focus on his personal career, and Cortez Bryant took over the position. Artists have come and gone throughout the life of Young Money; the label produces albums for its members but also provided a venue by which members could produce collaborative mixtapes and even an album.
A Stable Production Company
By 2008, Young Money was becoming productive and profitable. That year, two albums were released under the Young Money label: Tyga's No Introduction, which climbed to #9 on the US Rap Charts, and Lil' Wayne's The Carter III, which hit #1 on the R&B and Rap Charts in the US and Canada. In 2009, the label released Drake's So Far Gone, #3 on the US R&B Charts and #2 on the US Rap Charts.
In 2009, as a collaboration effort, the artists of Young Money produced the album, We Are Young Money, available in cd and in digital download. The entire album could be downloaded, or the singles are available for mp3 download. The album hit #1 on the US Rap Charts and #3 on the US R&B Charts. The artists involved began touring the United States and Canada in mid-2009 to promote the album. Opening for the Young Money artists include Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy, Jeremih, Drake, and Pleasure P.
A Bright Future
Artists now included on the label include Lil' Wayne, Drake, Mack Maine, Nicki Minaj, Tyga, Shanell, Short Dawg, T-Streets, Gudda Gudda, Jae Millz, Lil Chuckee, and Lil Twist. By combining personal fame and entertainment opportunities with those of Young Money, these artists have been able to capitalize on the duel recognition. Mixtapes and music downloads are made available on their personal websites and on Young Money's sites as well.
At this time, Lil' Wayne, Mack Maine, Nicki Minaj, and Drake all have release dates for upcoming albums under the Young Money label. In 2009, Cortez Bryant stepped down as president, and long-time member Mack Maine stepped into the position.
