Yolanda Adams would be born and raised in the city of Houston Texas and would be the youngest of six siblings. She would attend Sterling High School in Houston and would graduate in 1979 where she would go on to become a student at Texas Southern University. She studied education while at the university and would go on to become a teacher after she graduated but would shortly leave that career to pursue a career in music.
Career Start
Yolanda Adams would begin her musical career by singing a style of music mostly classified as gospel. The would attract the attention of Sound Gospel Records while singing with a choir in Houston that was affiliated with the Church of God in Christ. She was discovered by producer Thomas Whitfield while she was performing under the musical choir direction of Carl Preacher. She would go on to sing with the choir for many years and would be featured on their release in 1982 of the song For My Liberty where Yolanda Adams was the headlining soloist on the single.
Later on in 1986, Adams was featured on another album that was produced by Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar called Give Us Peace. After this release, Adams began to get the attention of many others when she would eventually sign a contract with the company Sound of Gospel and she would go on to produce her first album called Just As I Am in 1987. She would go on to sign with the record label Tribute Records and release another album called Through the Storm, which would further solidify her as an up and coming gospel singer. After that album she would release another called Save the World in 1992 that would include her first breakthrough single The Battle is the Lord’s.
She would tour in support of the album in many of the gospel venues across the United States but go back to the studio where she would release her next album in 1995 called More than a Melody. She would go on to make a music video from the single Gotta Have Love and also gain her mainstream attention in the gospel world as well. She would go on to release a DVD called Yolanda…Live in Washington, which would show material and performances from her first two albums.
Further Success
After her DVD release, Yolanda Adams would take a short break but come back with her final record for Verity Records called Songs From the Heart, where the single Only Believe would actually attain contemporary radio play. Another song on the album was dedicated to the Rosa Parks civil right issue and was said to be inspired by the poem by Maya Angelou. As any up and coming artist, Adams would release her first Christmas album in 2000 with a follow up the next year called The Experience. This would be her most popular album as of yet and would include the hit Never Give Up. The album would gain Adams a Grammy Award under the category of Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.
She would release a few more singles and then take a short break to gather her thoughts. She would come back in 2005 to release the album Day By Day. She would relieve Atlantic Records of their duties during this time and go to the record label of Columbia. She would release her second Christmas album called What A Wonderful Time in 2007.
