Band History
The history of the band can be traced to 1997 in Jacksonville Florida and is one of the rare punk bands which use violins as part of their music. The band was formed by guitarist Ben Eric Harper, bass player Warren Cook, drummer Longineu W. Parsons II and singer Ben Dobson. Their first album “Midget Tossing” was released in April 1997 on local DIY records label. The band went on an extensive tour which was not featuring the singer and violin player Sean Mackin.
Sean had appeared on some tracks from the first album and was beginning his start to join the band as a permanent member. The second album “Where We Stand” was released in 1997. The same year saw line up changes which brought in Ryan Key who replaced Ben Dobson. Key is credited to change the bands sound completely and move towards are more commercial appeal
The New Beginning
The band signed to Lobster records and released their third album “One for the Kids” in 2001. An EP was recorded in 2002 which brought in a lot of attention and they singed with major record label Capitol Records. They started recording their first major label debut for most part of 2002 and released “Ocean Avenue” in July of 2003. The band released the title single “Ocean Avenue” which reached No.27 on the Hot 100 US singles chart and created a nationwide recognition. The single would sell 500,000 copies and was certified Gold. The band now had massive press coverage which lead to high profile TV shows and a live performance on the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards. The album would peak at No.8 on the charts and would eventually sell 2 million copies.
Commercial Disappointment and Hiatus
The band performed on the 2005 MTV Awards as well and toured extensively. After the 2 year touring schedule the band regrouped to record the second album. They released “Lights and Sound” in 2006. The album debut at No.5 on the US album charts and has been certified Gold. Though it is considered as a commercial disappointment and the single “Rough Landing, Holly” and the accompanying video was criticized.
Despite the disappointment on sales they chose not to go on an extensive tour and were back in the studio to record a new album. The band released “Paper Walls” to mostly positive reviews but due to lack of any hit singles the album was another commercial disappointment.
The band announced that they are on a hiatus.
