Wings
At the end of the Beatles, I was really done in for the first time in my life. Until then, I was a kind of cocky sod.
Post Beatles
With the break up of The Beatles in the early part of 1970, Paul McCartney began working on his solo career in an attempt to debut his first album. The album would be backed up on vocals by his wife Linda. In August of 1971, the group would see the joining of two new members to the group, Seiwell and Laine. The album that was produced was called Wild Life and would be released under the Apple Records label. This was not considered to be much by the music critics who gave McCartney the cold shoulder on his new record.
The group would go on to release their next single called Give Ireland Back to the Irish, which was a response to the events dubbed as Bloody Sunday and the song would be banned from UK programming for many years. Wings would stand behind the release and even with all of its critics, the single would make it to number sixteen on UK Pop Charts and number one in Ireland as well as Spain. The group would not be outdone by this single and its controversy and would release another single in 1972 called Hi Hi Hi that would also be banned by the British Broadcasting Company for references to drugs and sex.
The group Wings would become more acclaimed after these two singles and in 1973 would embark on a tour through Brittan. However, it was right back to the studio after the tour where the group would crank out what is said to be their most successful album called Band on the Run. The album would immediately climb to number one in both the United States as well as the United Kingdom. This album would help Paul recover some of his popularity from critics after his name had taken on a sour note after the departure from The Beatles.
Rounding Out
The group would come to Nashville after the appearance of Paul and Linda at the Academy Awards show of 1974 to record their new album with new drummer Geoff Britton. Their next album would gain some acclaim in the United States and surprisingly contained an all country music track for their many listeners. The group was steady throughout most of the 1970’s while Paul and Linda kept pushing their sound through and through. The music would take on many different forms and be criticized both positive and negative by the hundreds of music writers that were now coming in on the scene.
Wings would have many different sounds throughout the decade of the 1970’s while some were loved and others were hated. The group got back into the limelight (although they never actually left the limelight) when they released their album called London Town but was the first album not to reach the number one position on the album charts in the United States. It would reach number two.
The End
McCartney received many mixed reviews when he chose to go off on his own as other more powerful music was being created by his former band mates. He did rectify himself in many different ways and was by far the most successful and well received of any other post Beatles project that existed. He continued to produce solid music that would allow his many fans to listen and see him and Linda play in concert. Still today, Paul continues to make appearances and special events and venues to play his music. One can find more information about Wings on McCartney’s official website.
Did You Know
The name Wings came to Paul as he was praying in the hospital while his first son was being born.
