Born in the projects of the city of Newark New Jersey, Whitney Houston would become one of the most celebrated female vocalist of all time. She has thrilled audiences with her many talents and has risen from the streets of Jersey to a pop culture legend. She would being her singing at a young age and would not stop. She is still continuing to tour and make guest appearances throughout the world. She has been awarded many times over for her musical talents and has gained much acclaim as a leader in charitable causes.
First Start
Whitney Houston would begin to sing under the instruction of her mother, who was a member of a Baptist choir. Houston would learn how to play the piano as well as become a soloist in the church choir before she was a teenager. She would get her start touring night clubs and bars throughout the city with her mother and would go on to become the lead vocalist in Michael Zagar Band’s release of the single Life’s A Party. After this recording, Zagar was said to have offered a singing contract for Houston although her mother would not allow it because she wanted her daughter to finish high school before starting her career. At the age of fifteen, she would also sing back up vocals for the hit group Chaka Khan. She would sing their hit single called I’m Every Woman in which she would later turn into one of her own hits. Before she would embark on her professional career, she would pay her dues as a back singer while sometimes also singing lead for the any industry greats of the time.
Career Start
Although she was offered numerous recording contracts throughout her early years, Whitney Houston would not sign until Clive Davis would get her own Artista’s record label in 1983. She would make her debut appearance on The Merv Griffin Show with him later that year after she had signed an international contract agreement. She would create material and song after song and finally in 1985 would release her first solo album that was self titled. She was heralded as an instant hit and was commented on by both the Rolling Stone magazine as well as the New York Times. She would have her first hit single called Someone For Me that would reach number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 and go to number one on the many R&B charts of the day. She began touring night clubs and entertaining other offers of larger venues. MTV began to play her music when her hit single How Will I Know would go to number one on charts throughout the world. The album would be multiple times platinum just in the United States.
Continued Success
In the year of 1986, Houston would be awarded her first Grammy Award in the category of Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female for the single called Saving All My Love For You. Her second album would do nothing but continue her successful track record and showcase her talents. The album was titled Whitney and was released in 1987. Some would go on to say that the songs were too similar to her first but the charts would tell the story where she had singles that would reach number one in multiple countries. The album would sell around nine million copies and eventually be certified nine times platinum winning her more Grammy Awards in 1988. During this time Whitney Houston began to voice her political opinions as well as began numerous events with charitable organizations. Some of the issues that she would help with would be AIDS and apartheid in South Africa. She would continue to release numerous albums that all held hit singles although some of the African Americans in the music community began to wonder if she would sell out to commercial success.
