Westside Connection
No real motivation…it’s life…I just had fun on this album…I wasn’t really trying to do outside of Mack 10…I wanted to sound different, but current…somebody who has done it as long as me has to be conscious…I don’t want to sound outdated.
Getting Together
Westside Connection is a gangsta rap supergroup made up of three established rap artists, WC, Ice Cube, and Mack 10. They began performing together, collaborating, first on a single for Mack 10's album, Mack 10; then on WC's album, Curb Servin'. After a number of collaborations, the three began to rap together on mixtapes and demos. It soon became apparent that they could record some of what they were creating.
Becoming a Group
They released their debut album as Westside Connection in 1996. Bow Down was released on Ice Cube's label, Lench Mob Records. The album released two singles, Bow Down and Gangstas Make the World Go Round. Bow Down peaked at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and at #1 on the Top R&B/hip hop charts. It certified platinum, with 1.7 million units sold. The album featured producers Ice Cube, Bud'da, Qdill, Cedric Sampson, and others.
Each artist continued to record and perform, promoting their own solo careers. However, during the next few years, they performed as Westside Connection as well. They produced the single, Bangin', which appeared on the soundtrack for the compilation, West Coast Bad Boyz II, Let it Reign for the soundtrack for the film, Thicker than Water, and It's the Holidaze for the soundtrack from the film, Friday After Next. In 2002, they collaborated with Mariah Carey on her track, Irresistable, which appeared on her album, Charmbracelet.
Another Album
In 2003, they released their second album, Terrorist Threats, through Mack 10's label, Hoo-Bangin' Records. The album peaked at #16 on the Billboard Top 200 and at #3 on the Billboard Top R&B/hip hop chart. To date, it has sold more than 670,000 units, certifying gold. The album offered the single, Gansta Nation, which reached #6 on the Top Rap chart.
Two years after the release of Terrorist Threats, Mack 10 left the group due to conflicts with Ice Cube. This appeared to be the end of Westside Connection, but recent rumors are that rapper The Game may take Mack 10's place in the group. These rumors stem from a verse he raps on a track with WC and Ice Cube, stating he may join Da Lench Mob, possibly implying Westside Connection. None of the three artists has confirmed or denied the addition, but Ice Cube has acknowledged the possibility.
Did you know . . .
On the album, Bow Down, the tracks, Cross 'Em Out and Put a 'K, King of the Hill, and Hoo Bangin' are all attacks on rival rap group, Cypress Hill.
In 2007, Westside Connection released a twenty-five track album, entitled The Best of Westside Connection. It is available for free audio streaming at MTV.com.
The track, Bow Down, appearing on the album of the same name, features the continuing rivalry between the east coast and west coast hip hop communities, although no rappers are named specifically.
