Weezer – Post Grunge Rock Heroes

“We want to be known as a rock band. Whatever the trends may be, rock will be with us” – Brian Bell

Geek Rock Mania

Weezer has created a cult like status not just in America but the rest of the world. Despite long gaps in their recording and even a hiatus for three years they still are one of the most critically praised alt rock bands ever. Their first two albums are regarded as the blueprints for post grunge movement. The single “Buddy Holly” and its accompanying video is still a defining moment. And in Rivers Cuomo they have Buddy Holly in spirit and in the cool looks.

The Early Years

The history of the band can be traced to 1992 when they played for Hollywood movie star Keanu Reeves music project Dogstar. They signed to Geffen records and started recording and writing while playing live shows for the next two years. They released their debut album “Weezer in 1994. The song “Undone – The Sweater Song” was the band first single and the Spike Jonze directed video was an instant hit on MTV.

But it would be their second single which would create the grungy guitar song with melodic singing as the bands signature style. “Buddy Holly” with its legendary video saw the band morphed into the “Happy Days” sitcom playing at the Arnolds-Drive In was a sensation on MTV. The video won 4 MTV awards for Weezer and 2 Billboard awards. The album had created a name for the band. The album has sold 10 million copies worldwide.

The Sophomore and Hiatus

The band started recording their second album through the early part of 1996, there were many ideas for the album which included a space rock opera, but the band decided to use demos written prior to the release of the first album as a blueprint. The album “Pinkerton” was released in Sept 2006. the initial response was negative, many calling it to the worst album of 2006. But over the years it has kept selling and achieved cult status and a Gold certification

After touring in 1997, they band members took a break and would not return until 2001 with a new album. The band released their third album Weezeralso called as “Green Album”. The comeback album was a hit selling 4 million copies worldwide.

The Elder Alt Rockers

In 2002, they released “Malidroit” which went Gold. Weezer embarked on a world tour which was well received. “Make Believe” in 2005 hit No.1 in the UK and was another international hit selling 4 million copies. The self titled “Red Album” in 2008 was critically well received and reached No.4 on the US charts. The single “Pork and Beans” was another hit reaching No.1 on the Modern rock tracks.

In 2009, Weezer released their seventh studio album “Raditude” to mix reviews and disappointing commercial sales. Weezer is one of the architects of the modern rock sound and is considered the original Geek rockers.
