"I don't really know of anybody who does the amount of things that I've done and had the success at it. It's because I get bored easy and I always try to figure out a way to stay stimulated and accomplish one thing after the other.”
Born to Perform
Born December 30, 1978, Tyrese Darnell Gibson spent his childhood in South-Central LA, more specifically, the Watts area. He was the youngest of four children raised, after his father walked out on the family when he was 10, by his single mother, Pricilla. As a child Tyrese loved to rap and sing. He was a member of a local group, Triple Impact. However, his first big break came in 1994, at the age of 16. At that time he appeared in a Coca-Cola commercial, briefly singing “always Coca-Cola”. This appearance led to guest appearances on Hanging With Mr. Cooper, The Parent 'Hood, and Martin.
At the tender age of 17, barely a year after the Coca-Cola commercial, his good looks led him to be hired by clothing company Tommy Hilfiger to model their clothing. 1998 saw Tyrese signing with RCA records and releasing his debut album, Tyrese. This album had a chart topping single, Sweet Lady, and garnered him a Grammy nomination as well as an American Music Award for “Best New Artist.”
Never a Dull Moment
In 2001 Tyrese released his sophomore album, 2000 Watts. Fittingly, this is also the name of the organization that he began to benefit inner city youths. The hit single from this project, Just a Baby Boy, was featured on the soundtrack of Baby Boy, Tyrese's film debut, directed and written by John Singleton. This was not just Tyrese's film debut, but also something no other unknown actor has done, scoring a major role in a major motion picture. This role was originally meant for TuPac Shakur, before he was murdered. Other movies Tyrese has appeared in include:
2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
Flight of the Phoenix (2004)
Four Brothers (2005)
Annapolis (2006)
Waist Deep (2006)
Transformers (2007)
The Take (2008)
Death Race (2008)
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Additionally, he was due to appear in the fourth sequel for the The Fast and the Furious series but, it didn't materialize. There is talk that he may appear in the fifth installment.
In between his acting roles Tyrese has also managed to release two more albums. First, in 2002 he released the album I Wanna Go There. The second was Alter Ego (2006). This is a double album set. One CD contains signature R&B singles, while the other contains a collection of rap songs performed by Black Ty, his rapper alter ego, hence the name of the album.
TGT
In 2007 Tyrese left his label, J Records. He became an independent artist and soon became a member of the supergroup, TGT. After several years of friendship he decided to join forces with Ginuwine and Tank to form the group. The first appearance of the group was on Tank's single, Please Don't Go. Due to difficulties with multiple labels and other planning hurdles, the CD and subsequent tour for the group is still in the planning and negotiations stages. This has led to mp3 music downloads being the only way TGT releases can be heard.
