Twiztid – Shock To The Rap System

Horror Rap Core

The duo is known for their bizarre rap persona which is a cross between Kiss white make up and rapper Coolio’s breads. The band performs a genre of music called horror core and hardcore rap. The gore filled album covers is as much for shock value as it is to entertain. The band is heavily influenced by the rapcore band Insane Clown Posse; you throw in some Cypress Hill beats with a good measure of outrageous and theatrical stage antics. The songwriter is filled with their obsession of serial killer horror movies.

The Formation

The duo came together in Warren, Michigan. Jamie Madrox and Monoxide (Paul Methric). They were already part of another rap band called House of Krazees which banded in 1997. After recording some demos they were invited to perform on the House of Horror Tour by Joseph Bruce who was part of the Insane Clown Posse and also a professional wrestler.

The Breakthrough

The band was then christened the name Twiztid by Joseph. They signed to Psychopathic Records that were also the label of their mentor. The band released their first album in 1997. The self titled album was indie release. Insane Clown Posse went on to sign with Island Records and helped them release their second album under Island/Def Jam records. The second album with its outrageous covers and pictures charted on the US Billboard album and peaked at No.149

The Shockers Continue

The duo released “Freakshow” with its shocking gore album which makes Marilyn Manson look like the Partridge family. The album received scathing reviews. Though the shock value helped it to reach no. 54 on the US album charts and they even covered the classic Doors song “People are Strange”

The band however was attracting better reviews than their own mentors Insane Clown Posse. In 2003 they released the “Green Book”. The album reached no. 52 on the US album charts. The album received negative reviews from the music press.

The Latter Years

The band continued to tour with the Insane Clown Posse and other label mates from Psychopathic records.

In 2005, they released “Man’s Myth” filled with profanity like all their other albums. The album was much more cohesive and for the first time the band received positive reviews. The album reached no. 62 on the US Album charts. A month later they released “Mutants Vol.2” which reached No.80 on the US album charts. The second album was more rock in its sound as compared to the predominantly hip-hop beats of the predecessor.

“Independence Day” was their 6th album released in 2007. It reached No.57 on the charts continuing their brand of horror rock. However after nearly 11 years in the music business they finally had commercial success with the 2009 album “W.I.C.K.E.D.”. It peaked at No.11 on the US charts. The album sounded was better than anything they had done before. It was huge step up for the band. The music critics called it their best album mixing rock and hip-hop in a perfect blend. The band painted a more theatrical persona and less outrageous street bizarre. It reached No. 4 on the Rap album chart and No.1 on the Independent Album chart
