My music is often a snapshot glimpse into my heart and head. You can't separate Tracy Lawrence the person from Tracy Lawrence the music. It's all part of my fiber. A part of who I am. It's the paths I've crossed, the pleasures and the pains of life's experiences, my life's little gems. Those are the elements that have lead to my personal and musical identity.
The Early Years
Tracy Lawrence was born in Atlanta, Texas. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1990 in hopes of pursuing a music career. He performed in small venues, including the Bluebird Cafe, where he met Wayne Edwards. Edwards eventually became Lawrence's manager.
Edwards was instrumental in facilitating a contract for Lawrence with Atlantic Records. Tracy Lawrence released his first album, Sticks and Stones, soon after. The album produced four top 10 singles: Sticks and Stones, which climbed to #1, Today's Lonely Fool, which reached #3, Runnin' Behind,which peaked at #4, and Somebody Paints the Wall, which reached #8. The album certified platinum.
A Successful Career
The 1990s were a successful decade for Tracy Lawrence, with four more releases, three of which certified double platinum. From these came seven #1 hits. In 1992, Billboard named Lawrence Top New Male Vocalist. In 1993, he received the Academy of Country Music's Best New Artist and Top New Male Vocalist awards.
He returned in 2000 with Lessons Learned, which peaked at #9 on the US country charts. The album released three singles, but only the title track appeared in the Top Ten. Also in 1998, Lawrence co-produced nine of the thirteen songs for the Broadway theater production, The Civil War: The Nashville Sessions, A Musical Event. The music is available on a three-disc collection that includes songs by Tracy Lawrence, Travis Tritt, Trace Adkins, Trisha Yearwood, and more.
Here and Now
Tracy Lawrence has released four more studio albums since Lessons Learned, plus a holiday album, All Wrapped Up in Christmas, in 2007. While the albums have charted in or near the Top Ten, they have all been moderate commercial successes. In the early 2000s, he toured Europe, ending the tour with a concert for peace keeping troops in Kosovo.
Lawrence is currently touring the United States. He has not announced a release date yet regarding a new album. He has also started the Tracy Lawrence Foundation, which funds scholarships and purchases technology equipment for schools in need. He performs an annual concert in his hometown each year to benefit the foundation. He also takes part in an annual golf tournament in Texarkana that benefits his foundation and Alzheimer's research.
Did you know . . .
In 1991, Tracy Lawrence was shot four times, helping a friend who was being mugged. One of the bullets is permanently lodged in his pelvis.
Lawrence released a Christian album in 2009, entitled Up To Him, which has been nominated for a Grammy Award.
Lawrence made a cameo appearance on the television show, Walker: Texas Ranger, playing a wedding singer, in 2000.
