Tori Amos
For the most part, pianos are female to me. Sometimes they’re dykes, and they’re always good fun.
Carolina Born
Although Tori Amos was born in the sleepy little town of Newton, North Carolina, she would move north to the state of Maryland with her family in 1965. She began to play music at a very early age and was said to be composing simple pieces on the piano by the age of five years old. She was awarded a scholarship to a prestigious music academy although she would later be asked to leave due to her love for modern rock and pop music. She would go on to play at piano bars at age fourteen where she would be chaperoned by her father and was already beginning to gain some small time status. Finally, at the age of twenty one, she would leave the state of Maryland and move to Los Angeles to pursue her passion of music.
First Success
Tori Amos would begin her professional music career with the group called Y Kant Tori Read. The group would produce their first album in July of 1988, which was self titled. Although the album would gain little attention and the group was relatively unknown, she would not be deterred and would make an attempt at a solo career. Her first record would not gain much acclaim but she would go on to release Under the Pink, which would make it to the number twelve position on the Billboard 200. After this production, she would embark on a small tour and then release her third studio album called Boys for Pele in January of 1996. The album would make it to the number two position on the Billboard 200 and would be considered her best selling album to date.
Success
Tori Amos would then go on to distance herself from commercial production companies and would have her barn at her home in England turned into a recording studio where she could privately record at her own leisure. In May of 1998, she released the album called From the Choirgirl Hotel. This album has been said to be an expression of her woman hood and would go on to sell more than one hundred and fifty thousand copies in its first week of sales. After becoming a mother, Amos had the idea of covering songs that had been previously released by men about women and would release the album called Strange Little Girls.
This would later be said by Amos to be an album that would release her from her commercial recording contract as she would say that she did not feel her interests or music were being represented in the fashion that she wished. She would go on to sign with Epic Records although she would not be satisfied at this record label either. Her musical stardom began to wane at this time but she would come back in 2005 with the album The Beekeeper, which would eventually go to number five on the Billboard 200. In 2007, she would go on to release American Doll Posse that would also make it to the number five position on the Billboard 200.
