Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers

"I've got a lot of respect for Tom - he's a deep and soulful cat. Tom is a heroic character in his own kind of way. And he's got a very good band; they're quick, and they know the fundamental music." ~ Dylan, 1987

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - The beginnings

Originally from Gainesville, FL, veteran members Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench moved to Los Angeles to record with their original band, Mudcrutch. After Mudcrutch disbanded the three united to form Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (1975). With additional members Ron Blair and Stan Lynch, they began their early rise to popularity in the UK. News of their foreign success filtered back to the US and early singles were re-released, Breakdown hit the Top 40 in 1978.

The Heartbreakers have endured legal battles (one leading to Petty's bankruptcy), personal issues, side projects, member turnover, disputes over album pricing, and members breaking off to do solo tours without hampering their ability to come back together and perform as though they've never been apart.

Enduring through change

Even when Petty went "solo" for the 1989 release of Full Moon Fever, band mates Campbell and Tench were greatly involved in the recordings, even as all the current members (except Stan) were with Wildflowers. Petty also recorded several albums with the Traveling Wilbury's, which included George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan.

Mike Campbell has many songwriting credits and album contributions to his name, including songs recorded by greats Johnny Cash, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks and production credits for songs on Mystery Girl by Roy Orbison.

Benmont Tench became part of Works in Progress Administration in 2008 in addition to remaining loyal to the Heartbreakers.

Together Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have released 12 studio albums, 3 live albums, 6 videos, 23 Award nominations and won 6 Awards.

Legends are made

Over the years, playing for humanity and special events has dotted their resume. The 1985 charity concert, Live Aid, 2001 America: A Tribute to Heroes, 2002 Concert for George, in memory of George Harrison, and a 30 year anniversary performance in their hometown are but a small few of the notables.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' star on Hollywood's Walk of fame in 1999, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, the first year they were eligible, and headlining at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in 2006, were testaments of the groups lasting popularity. Playing for nearly a billion people, they performed a highly acclaimed performance during the Super Bowl XLII half-time and completed a sold out tour in 2008 to precede the 2009 release of Live Anthology, spanning their entire career that garnered a four and a half star rave from Rolling Stone, thus proving their enduring popularity. Grammy Award winner Runnin' Down A Dream, released in 2007, documented the Heartbreakers decades' long story as the personification of the American Dream

The first studio album released by Heartbreakers in eight years is due for release in Spring 2010. Mojo single Good Enough is available for streaming at the new TOMPETTY.com website.
