It is his flamboyant vocal style which has the unique range that has kept the audiences captivated and of course the famous raw sexuality which he always radiates. His residency at hotels in Las Vegas started in the late 60s and since then he always returns to the famed Vegas Strip for live performances. It is at these live shows where women are often throwing their knickers on stage. A Welshman in his heart even though he has been living in America for a long time, plans to return to his home country soon.


Early Life


Tom Jones was born near a small town in Cardiff, Wales. He began singing at a very age and dropped out of school. At age 16 he married Melinda Trenchard, he worked various odd jobs before his singing career started.


By 1964, he started fronting a local band that recorded a few singles and toured extensively in Wales. Tom Jones moved to London to record music with Gordon Mills who had spotted Jones performing. Gordon Mills knew he had a star in his hand and could mould the singer's career to superstar success. In 1965 he signed with Decca Records as all the other labels thought his vocal style was too raunchy. It was in 1965 when his single "It's Not Unusual" was released which was a massive hit all over the UK. He also recorded the theme song for James Bond and went on to with the Best New Artist Grammy.


The Rise to Superstardom


Tom Jones and his manager wanted to change the sexy image a little bit and therefore recorded traditional songs like "Green Green Grass of Home". This also started a string of super hit albums and singles including the raunchy "What's New Pussycat".


In 1967, he started to perform in Las Vegas which would bring him immense commercial success and widespread popularity. Tom Jones met Elvis in Vegas and started a great friendship right until Elvis's death. He did several hugely successful TV variety shows between 1967 - 1971. There was a little dip in his career in the 70s as new bands cut into his audience. Tom Jones did manage a No.1 county hit "Say You'll stay Till Tomorrow". In the 80s Jones would often record music for many soundtracks and his cover song "Kiss" by Prince for a movie soundtrack was a hit.


He continued to release pop oriented albums with mixed success through out the 80s and 90s. His tours and live shows easily managed to attract a lot of attention and commercial success. Churning out the old hits to a thrilling, as usual the ladies throwing their knickers on the stage was now a tradition


The Renewed Interest


Tom Jones in 1998 stole the show at the Glastonbury Festival which had performances from Pulp and Robbie Williams that year. It brought back huge interest in his catalogue and live shows. Buoyed by this interest Tom Jones release a covers album Reload which would become his biggest hit. Selling 4 million copies it featured songs like "Burning Down the House" with The Cardigans. "Sex Bomb" and "Lust for Life". He also performed a rocking version of "Mama told me not to come" with rock band Stereophonics which reached no.4 in the UK charts


Tom Jones was honored at 2003 Brit Awards for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. More accolades followed as in 2006, he was knighted by the Queen. In 2007 he performed at Wembley Stadium for the Concert for Diana. He was joined on stage by Aerosmith's guitar player Joe Perry.


Tom Jones is easily one of the most popular artists in the world.
