Tina Turner

For me the goddess is the female of God, She is more powerful, if different.

Early Years

Birthed by name of Anna Mae Bullock and the younger of two daughters, Tina Turner was born on November 26, 1939 in the small town of Nutbush, Tennessee. Although coming from an uncertain childhood, Turner overcame many obstacles and emerged as the "Queen of Rock N' Roll" to her millions of adoring fans.

The Stars Aligned

Sparks flew as newlyweds Ike and Anna Mae joined together in the early 1960's. Anna Mae met the up and coming Mississippi blues artist Ike Turner in a nightclub in St. Louis whom she would later marry in 1962 (one may find other sources claiming 1958). When a scheduled singer failed to show for one of Ike's recordings, Tina stepped in to record the vocals for the then yet to be released song A Fool In Love. Instantaneously the hit propelled its title to the number two spot on the Top 30. It was then when the Ike and Tina Turner Revue was formed but before she was supposedly yet wed. It was later said that Ike was the major influence in the change of name with other dark rumors floating in the background.

Depolarizing Duo

Later in the 1960's, the Turners' talent got into the light of the mainstream pop and had varying success over the next few years that followed. The pair released such hits as Idolize You and the still greatly revered River Deep, Mountain High. Along with producing their own works, the two covered Creedence Clear Water Revival's Proud Mary, oddly enough becoming the pair's greatest commercial success securing a spot on the 1979 March Billboard Hot 100 climbing to the number four spot. The covering of this single also awarded them a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance for a Duo or Group.

Although surrounded by success, Ike's role as the couples manager and decision maker began taking a toll on the financial aspect of the company and his developing drug addictions began to take hold. This combination would lead to a turbulent relationship for the members of the group as well as a physically abusive relationship for Tina herself. Fortunately, even though the couple were going through rough times, they still held the support of their contemporary counter parts through songwriters David Bowie to rock n' roll performers such as the Rolling Stones.

Uphill Battle

Further down the negative path, Ike opened his own recording studio and produced a record label he called Bolic Sound, which was homage to Tina Turner's family name of Bullock. From this the couple sought success focusing on Tina's solo career and in 1971 produced their first album Tina Turns the Country On. Unfortunately this album and her later acting roles did little to register the Turner name on virtually any of the musical "A" lists. To no one's dismay, marital problems would eventually ensue due not to Tina but her husband Ike continuing down a path of self loathing and destruction.

Determination and Strong Will

Finally attaining the courage to end her relationship with Ike, Tina started out with little money left to survive. Luckily, her steadfast friends within both the music and television industry felt she had much yet to give. After her separation, Tina Turner began the start of her solo career that would propel her to being one of the greatest multi-talented artists of present day.

Through her contacts, she slowly worked her way from guest appearances on shows such as "The Brady Bunch Hour," "Donny and Marie," and "The Sonny and Cher Show," to eventually winning the favor of European audiences, which would finally convince U.S. label Capitol Records to sign her.

With the release of Let's Stay Together and following up with the powerhouse What's Love Got To Do With It, Tina Turner set the wheels in motion for one of the greatest comebacks in music history. The release of the single What's Love Got To Do With It, Tina has been bombarded with awards and success well into the current decade having a Tennessee state road dubbed Tina Turner Highway.

Present Day

To the current date, Tina Turner still makes appearances at music industry awards shows and lends her voice to many progressive albums created by the music community. Her musical career has afforded many options and she now splits her time between a handful of European countries such as France and Switzerland when she is not making special appearances.
