Getting their start in the city of San Francisco, California, the alternative rock group Third Eye Blind began their career with a rocky start and that is how it remains to the present. However, they have been able to produce quite a few albums that have gained the attention of many in the mainstream and are continuing to tour the United States with temporary stand ins here and there. From their first demos, the band has been able to establish themselves as a reputable ensemble within the alternative rock culture.
Starting Out
The band Third Eye Blind created their first demo album in 1993 but unfortunately did little to gain the attention of any real record labels or producers. With the release of their second demo in 1995, the band was able to garner a few eyes their way, including those of Clive Davis who would invite them to perform an audition for Arista Records of New York City. Jenkins, who was the band leader, had made it customary for their band to release a piñata full of candy at the local dives that they were playing in.
In New York for Arista Records, they released a piñata of live crickets. The record executives were less than impressed. The band would go on to search for record labels for its alternative grunge style and finally land another audition with Epic Records. Although this did not create any definitive contracts, it did gain them a spot opening for the group Oasis. This would prove to be their biggest break as of yet and the band was paid double for an encore performance demanded by the audience. From this performance, the band was able to gain popularity and would go on to sign with Elektra Records.
Gaining Ground
The group produced their first self titled album in 1997 that would include five singles. The band had one singles hit, Semi-Charmed Life that would climb to number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and would also go to number one on the Modern Rock Tracks. Third Eye Blind was also asked to perform on Saturday Night Live, which gained them even more exposure that led the group to becoming the opening act of a U2 tour during that time period.
Their self titled album has been the group’s best seller, which grossed about six million album sales in the U.S. Their second album came just before the turn of the century in 1999 when the group release Blue. Although selling seventy five thousand copies in its first week, it was not considered a success by most and some fans of the past were some what unhappy at their purchase. Four singles were contained on the album such as Anything and Never Let You Go.
Internal Troubles
The group decided that in the year 2000, it was time for some internal house cleaning and fired Kevin Cadogan from the group. Cadogen felt that this was entirely unfounded and quickly followed with a lawsuit under the category of wrongful termination. The band had to do some soul searching because mostly they knew that the move would keep Cadogen from receiving payment for services so Third Eye Blind settled out of court in June of 2002.
The band would then embark on a heavy schedule of international touring for the next couple of months and after would take a long break being worn out from the road. They would come back to release a few more albums, none of which gained much notoriety. There many fans can follow their progress on the official home page where they may find a few free music downloads.
Did You Know
The name for the group has been said to have come from vodka.
