“Radio Retaliation is definitely a more overt political statement [...] There's no excuse for not speaking out at this point, with the suspension of habeas corpus, outsourced torture, illegal wars of aggression, fuel, food, and economic crises. It's hard to close your eyes and sleep while the world is burning around you. If you are an artist, this is the most essential time to speak up."

Thievery Corporation consists of two artists together, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton. They are the international DJ and production duo that came together to create the band, as well as the artists who work with them on and off.
They came together to form one of the best electronica/dance bands with soothing mixes for lounge music. They have been playing together for over a decade, and they founded the Eighteenth Street Lounge club, and the record label that follows it. They are still the heads of it today.
The Beginning to a Friendship
The two met at a local club in 1995 at Washington DC, and were immediately drawn together because of their love for the club life. They came across the idea of mixing jazz, bossa nova, and dub music together to see what would become of it. It was a success. From there they created their first record label, Eighteenth Street Lounge giving their listeners one of a kind, new music to listen too.
They started out in 1997, sending out their single Shaolin Satellite. They followed this release in 2002 with The Richest Man in Babylon. These were all done on their own record label, and going strong with the audiences. They continued to hire singers from all over to fit in as vocalists including Loulou, Emilíana Torrini, and Pam Bricker. This gave their music more of a feel to it by adding lyrics.
Moving Further Down the Road
During 2005, they released yet another titled The Cosmic Game; this gives the listener a more psychedelic sound than their traditional music. 2006 proved to be a good year when they released, Versions that held various remixes of other artist’s original songs remixed by the duo.
Thievery Corporation also toured around the United States, stopping to perform at Lollapalooza. Rob Myers, the bands guitar player photographed the whole tour. The tour started in Washington, DC, and included five sold out shows. They were nominated for the Grammy award for best recording package in 2008 for their fifth studio album titled Radio Retaliation.
Different Views, Opposing or Not
Thievery Corporation uses a wide database of music styles, and languages to get the precise mix they are looking for. These languages include English, French, Romanian, Hindi, Spanish, Persian, and Portuguese. They have had one of the largest world’s music influences.
They have taken political views in account during their music career as well, hoping to make a difference in the world. They oppose war, and exploitative trade agreements. They support human rights, and the cure to stop hunger. They included songs that speak of the troubles they are fighting for such as Revolution Solution. They presented their opposing views to the former president, George W. Bush’s administration. They have tried to end the Iraq war by playing in the Operation Ceasefire concert in 2005. They are also part of the World Food Programme fighting to get hunger issues out of the way.
Present Times
In Landover, Maryland, they opened for Sir Paul McCartney in August, 2009 at FedEx Field. The group also spoke out against the IMF, after performing Vampires, their politically charged song. This was during Lollapalooza in 2009. They have shot their own music videos for their songs as well using their record label.
Did you know that…

…They have worked with the Flaming Lips, as well as other artists from across the globe to create an eclectic mix of music.
