The Early Days
Formed in 2001, Theory of a Deadman, sometimes known as TOAD, is based in Vancouver, Canada. Frontman Tyler Connolly and bassist Dean Beck founded the band. After giving a demo to fellow Canadian, Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger, they were offered a record deal with his label, 604 Records.
They released their first album, Theory of a Deadman, in 2002. Chad Kroeger did much of the writing for the album, and the result was an album that sounded very much like Nickelback. They embarked on a three-month tour of the United States with Saliva and Audiovent.
Building Momentum
In 2005, the band released Gasoline. They launched a tour with Shinedown and No Address, followed by their promotional tour headlined by Breaking Benjamin and The Exies. Multiple singles from the album were used on the video game, Fahrenheit, which, in the United States is known as Indigo Prophecy. The album spawned four singles that landed on the mainstream charts, and the album, itself, made it to the top 60.
Theory of a Deadman released their third album, Scars and Souvenirs, in 2008. Their most successful album to date, Scars and Souvenirs spawned a number of hits, including Bad Girlfriend, which would become their first hit to reach #1 on a mainstream rock chart. Several singles from the album were released exclusively for mp3 download to iTunes and Zune. In 2009, they released a special edition of the album, which included bonus tracks and a dvd.
