The Gothic Creators
The Cure, they came, they saw and they conquered. From very humble beginnings in Sussex, the band has been one of the most important and influential in the late 80s and early 90s. They have played in arenas all across the world and created a counter culture with their fans wearing gothic styled make-up and black clothes. They have some of the most dedicated fans for a rock band. The Cure has sold nearly 15 million albums worldwide but that is just a shade of their legacy represents.
It the gloomy vision of the world in their lyrics, themes of isolation, depression and loneliness presented with an intellectual depth and post-punk sound. The band has always been well ahead of their time and is easily the first true pioneers of the indie/ alt rock movement. They did not have mainstream success until well into their careers, but did not stop or change their style; their ground breaking and avant-garde music videos have ensured a lasting legacy. It is Robert Smith's incredible passion for his words and non-conformist attitude towards mainstream sound or lyrics has lead him to being described as Godlike Genius!
The Early Beginning
Robert Smith the legendary lead singer and principal songwriter is the only surviving member from the original line-up. The roots can be traced to 1977 when the band started to call them selves Easy Cure. The bands sound was punk influenced pop. The band started performing locally but spent bulk of their time rehearsing and recording demos. By 1978, they released their first single; controversially titled "Killing an Arab", followed by their full-fledged debut album "The Imaginary Boys".
An early big moment came when they released "Boys Don't Cry". The post punk sound with its distinctive Robert Smith vocals has over the years attained cult status.
Their second album "Seventeen Seconds" featured the compelling and unsettling song "The Forest". The phenomenal lead keyboards and bass interplay were creating new sounds which were unheard of at that point. The album reached top 20. And the band went on a tour of the UK.
Gaining Ground
In 1981 they released "Faith" which featured the song "Primary" a popular at Cure shows. The 1982, "Pornography" saw them break into the Top 10 in the UK charts for the very first time. The album is considered the bands sound drifting into the gothic era which by now was also taking shape with Robert Smith's make up and black clothes.
The next album was the more pop sounding "The Top" released in 1984 their first to chart in the US due to their extensive touring. After a lengthy and successful worldwide tour the band started recording their follow-up album. Released in 1985, "Head on the Door" featured the lightweight "Close to Me". Its clapping and bass intro made it instantly likeable and lightweight.
The Gothic Rise
It was their next album which was their mainstream breakthrough in the US. "Kiss me Kiss me Kiss me" peaking at no. 35 and is their first album to go platinum. The touring and the videos received wide spread popularity. But it would be their next album which would make Cure the "reluctant" stadium touring superstars. Released in 1989 "Disintegration" was a phenomenal success. Peaking at No12 in the US charts, the band had now completely mainstream. The single "Lullaby" was pure gothic, haunting vocal delivery (in whispers) and the ever present bass line made it a cult classic. The album has sold 2 million copies in the US alone and the band found them selves playing stadium shows to nearly 50,000 people. It was too much for the band and Robert Smith was sure he had become what he did not set out to be
After a break from recording and touring, Robert Smith set in motion the recording for their next album "Wish". Released in 1993, the album charted at No2 on the US charts and has been noted for the song "Friday I'm in Love" their international chart topper.
The New Decade and a Lasting Legacy
Throughout the 90s the band did continue to release album though there was a dip in their popularity and the music became less accessible. In 2000 they released the Grammy nominated "Bloodflowers" peaking at No.16 on the US charts.
The group continued to tour and in 2004 after signing with Geffen Records released the self-titled "The Cure" is a modest and simple effort to capture the old sound of The Cure. The album is another Top 20 chart but by now Robert Smith is finally at peace with his contribution to alternative music and happy to see younger bands take over from where he left off. In 2007 the band go on a 4Tour of the world to promote their upcoming 2008 album "4:13"
Robert Smith deserves the accolades he has received as an enduring and yet mysterious figure of Rock. The Cure's obvious influence on so many bands has ensured a lasting legacy
