Since the 1960s, The Whispers have been releasing hit singles. The long time established R&B and dance vocal group has been consistently popular through several decades. They have showed that they have both staying power and decades of hits

In the Beginning

The Whispers formed back in 1964 in Watts, California. Starting out, the band consisted of twin brothers Walter and Wallace (Scotty) Scott, Nicholas Caldwell, Gordy Harmon and Marcus Hutson. These men were together for nearly an entire decade. In 1973, former member of Friends of Distinction Leaveil Degree replaced Gordy Harmon.

All throughout the 1970s as well as the 1980s The Whispers had several hits. They were a frequent visitor of the Billboard hot 100 chart. They also frequented the Hot Dance Club Play chart in 1980. Their hit And the Beat Goes On was to thank for this success. They also experienced success with their hits Can You Do the Boogie as well as Out the Box.

Continued Success

In 1987, The Whispers were able to find a top ten hit with their hit Rock Steady. It was their first top ten single on the Hot 100. It went all the way to #7 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the R&B charts. They were able to enjoy years of success with their fresh and new sound of jazz, pop, gospel as well as funk. They were able to see success with several different dance hits.

Until the mid 1970s, they recorded all of the work in Philadelphia. They then moved all of their studio work across the country to Los Angeles. It was there that they saw most of their success. This was with the help of their manager, Dick Griffey as well as their label SOLAR (Sounds of Los Angeles Records). It was after this that they eventually founded their own label they called Black Tie.

Charity

In addition to having several hit singles and plenty of success, they contributed to charity often. They were very active with the group PAL (Police Athletic League) Reading Program. In addition to this, they also worked heavily with domestic abuse awareness as well as with several cancer agencies. Although they had very busy and successful careers, they were still able to donate so much of their time and money into causes that they believed in.

In 1989, Marcus Hutson had to leave the group due to illness. Just eleven years later, in 2000, he passed away. The other band members all decided that they could not and would not attempt to replace him. The Whispers now perform as a quartet.

Recent Work

Even after the passing of beloved member Marcus Hutson, The Whispers have still been able to be successful. In 2003, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Then, in 2006, they produced a new album. This was the first album released with their new company entitled Satin Tie Productions. Their album, For Your Ears Only is said to be dedicated to their loyal and long time fans.

They are still currently recording and producing work. They came out with an album as recent as 2009. Their album was aptly titled Thankful as they have so much to be thankful for. The band has been together for more than 40 years. They are still able to enjoy longtime success and very loyal and loving fans. It is not often that you will find a group that has been together for so long with so little controversy and so much love and dedication.
