Band History
The band members of The Used had been a part of several other groups before they came together to start The Used. Ace drummer Branden Steineckert, Jeph Howard and Quinn Allman started a band together. During their search for a lead singer they recruited Bert McCracken was selected based on his songwriting and vocal talent. After creating several demos in 2001 and even performing for record label executives, they were still unable to get a record deal. But despite the setback, The Used eventually signed with major label Reprise Records.
The Debut
The band got to know that there was already a band with the name Used in Boston. So they added the prefix to avoid any legal issues. The Used released their self titled first album in 2002. The album received mixed reviews and managed to peak just outside the Top 50 on the US album charts. The single “Buried Myself Alive” received a lot of airplay and it reached No.13 on the Alt Rock charts in the US. Two other singles charted and the album would gradually be certified Gold. Based on the success of the album, The Used was invited to play the Ozzfest, Warped tour as well as the Linkin Park Projekt Revolution. The band started to gain widespread acclaim.
The Second Coming
The band started recording their second album in early 2004 with producer John Feldmann who was instrumental in getting The Used signed. The album “In Love and Death” had a lot of emotional baggage due to the personal loss of the lead singer. However the album was very well received by the critics and is regarded as their best record. It featured the single Take it Away” which was a hit and peaked at No.13 on the Alt Rock charts. After considerable promotion by Reprise records, the album debut at an incredible No.6 on the US Billboard charts. This was their highest chart entry till that time. The album would be a commercial hit selling nearly 2 million copies worldwide.
Latter Years
The band released “Lies for Liars” in 2007 after taking some time off from recording. The album peaked at No.5 on the US charts but would be a commercial disappointment. The band toured Asia and Australia before heading to the studio.
They followed it up with “Artwork” released in Aug 2009. The reviews were mixed and the album has also failed to reach the sales figures of the first two albums.
Did You Know: In 2004, the lead singer Bert McCracken’s ex-girlfriend was pregnant with his son died of a drug overdose. Thus prompting the second album to be called “In Love and Death”.
Did You Know: On the album “Lies for the Liars” right after the final song ends, a hidden 30-second track called “Queso” appears is about “Quesadilla”
Did You Know: Along with Alt Rock/Post hardcore band My Chemical Romance, The Used released a cover of Queen + David Bowie classic “Under Pressure
