The Big Man of Rap:
Notorious BIG is considered one of the greatest rappers of all times. He took East Coast Rap movement to the mainstream. His street smart rhymes along with the raw and stripped down hip hop production brought him acclaim and massive commercial success. His posthumously released second album features the gangsta rap style but with a more Mafioso and sophisticated charm- inspired from the Al Pacino movie Scarface. His two albums are considered raps blue print into the gangsta genre. The second album is one of only three albums from the rap genre to have been certified diamond.
Early Years
Notorious BIG was born Christopher George Wallace and raised in the rough neighborhood of Queens. By the time Wallace was in his early teens he started selling drugs and was often in trouble with the law. By 1990 he was arrested and he served a 10 month jail sentence.
He started rapping on the streets in a completely improvised free style manner. He recorded a few demos and it reached Sean Combs (P.Diddy) who was at that time working for Uptown Records. Combs upon hearing the tape signed Wallace immediately. Combs also influenced Wallace to get out of the drug dealing and focus on his rap talents. By 1993, Combs had formed his own label Bad Boy Records and Wallace was signed. Wallace gained a lot of recognition for his mix of Mary J Blige’s single “Real Love”.
Mainstream Success
Wallace’s first taste of success was when he released the single “Juicy”. The single reached No. 27 on the Hot 100 charts and his album “Ready to Die” reaching No. 13 on the US Album Charts. The album gained momentum and sold 4 million copies in the US. He was the focal point of the East Coast vs. West Coast Rap rivalry headed by one time associate Tupac Shakur from the other side.
Wallace started recording his second album but there would be significant delays. He was arrested on charges on assault. A second arrested on drug and weapons possession occurred in 1996. Tupac was shot in Sept of 96 and Wallace’s involvement was suggested by widespread media.
Wallace completed the recording of his second album and released the song “Hypnotized” which went straight into No.1 on the singles charts. While in LA he was shot and killed in Mar 1997. Fifteen days later his second album was released which debut at summit of the US charts. The album has sold 10 million copies in the US.
Wallace Legacy: The hard core rap songwriting had gained widespread acclaim and Wallace had changed the rap landscape by taking his East Coast Rap movement to the mainstream.
