The Soundtrack Band
The Cheetah Girls were predominantly created by the Walt Disney as a concept for the eponymous movie, movie sequels, soundtrack album, tour and merchandise. The idea has been very successful as the band has sold 2 million copies of the first soundtrack album. The tour has grossed an astonishing $43 million dollars. The group also launched a clothing line, doll line, perfumes and book series as part of the merchandising business.
The Career
The group made a highly success TV movie which was released on the Disney channel subscribers in the US. Based on a book by Deborah Gregory, the movie debut in Aug, 2003. The success prompted several possible business possibilities which the executives at Walt Disney were more than happy to implement.
The movie DVD sold an astonishing 800,000 copies making it a super success.
The Cheetah Girls were primarily a quarter and then reduced to Adrienne Bailon, Sabrina Bryan and Kiely Williams. They even started taping a TV sitcom in 2004-2005. But even though it went in for production and they even shot a pilot it was squashed. Raven Symone who completed the quartet decided to move on after the super success of her own sit com leaving the rest of the girls in limbo. However with the support of the management and Disney, they knew the threesome could still prove to be successful
The Trio Cheetah
The band recorded their first album as trio in Oct 2005, the offering was a Christmas record titled “Cheetah-licious Christmas”. The album featured signature Christmas songs and originals as welled. It is produced by Antonnia Armato who is considered the most preferred producer for teen acts having produced the like of Miley Cyrus. The album features the Mariah Carrey Christmas classic “All I want for Christmas is You”. The album peaks just outside the Top 50 on the US album charts. However the first single which they recorded was much earlier in the year. The group recorded “I Won’t Say (I am in Love)” for the DisneyMania 3 album.
After touring in support of the album they began working on their debut album. But the album was put on hold as Disney wanted to start filming the sequel to The Cheetah Girls. The movie was released in 2006 and was a smash hit. It was viewed by a staggering 8.1 million viewers making the then it the highest rated Disney TV movie. The band started their “Party’s Just Begun Tour”; due to the very busy schedule it was obvious that they had to record and write the new album while on tour. The album was delayed and was eventually released in Sept 2007, titled “TCG”
The album peaked at No. 44 on the US charts. The two singles “S Bring it On” and “Fuego” was released but were not major hits. By the end of they year they recorded another Christmas record, this time a single for the Disney Channel Holiday album.
The Break-Up
The girls started filming the third part of the Cheetah Girls franchise called “The Cheetah Girls: One Word in March 2008. In fact this was the first movie in the series not to feature Raven Symone. The movie soundtrack was released on Aug 19 followed by the release of the movie 3 days later. The movie was watched by only 6.2 million subscribers which was the lowest ever rating for the series. The Disney executives were mindful that viewers no longer related to the same concept and therefore as is the case with most teen acts the longevity is always the question. The group went on a One World tour by the fall of 2008. The tour featured a mixed set list of covers and originals. The bands three month tour ended in San Diego on Dec 21 2008. It was announced in Jan 2009 that the band had disbanded focusing on solo careers
