The Avett Brothers

It doesn't cost anything to be honest, loyal, and true.

Small Town Carolina

Two brother, Scott and Seth Avett, formed the folk rock group titled The Avett Brothers, who play banjo and guitar in a more traditional manner but with a new sound. With influences from practically every genre of music in existence, the brothers pull their influences from groups such as Buddy Holly, The Beatles, and many others as they bring their original sound to the many small town venues throughout the United States.

Concord, North Carolina, traditionally known as one of the original birthplaces of NASCAR, released the brother into the world to bring a new sound to one of the oldest professions in the world. A band founded on the principles of hard work and dedication would create a sound unique in itself and would become the inspiration of many new and upcoming artists of the current day.

Starting Out

Forming their first band called Nemo, the Avett Brothers began to experiment with music of other sorts. The acoustic sounds of the banjo and guitar, coupled with the vocals and upright bass of Bob Crawford along with Joe Kwon on the cello, sought to lure The Avett Brothers into an entirely new genre of music that would consist of blue grass, country, and rock.

This new sound let the brothers to self title their new band name and abandon the old Nemo project. After finding the members they needed to complete their quartet, The Avett Brothers released their first album called Country Was and promptly ensued with a tour to promote this new album. Relatively unknown, the band went back into the studio, the band put together some original songs along with some covers and released the album Live At the Double Door Inn.

Although getting very little attention nationwide, the release of a few more albums began to create a local buzz and the group sold out two New Year's Eve shows at The Neighborhood Theatre, a small venue in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Gaining Momentum

With more albums being released showing the ambition and dedication of the group, the group got their first big break while playing on the Late Night with Conan O'Brien television show in May of 2007 where they performed the song Paranoia in B-Flat Major. The release of the album Emotionalism created their first spot on national music charts hitting number 134 on the Billboard Top 200.

After this album release, The Avett Brothers were recognized as Duo/Group of the Year at the Americana Music Association. More television exposure ensued when the band featured its single If It's the Beaches from their album The Gleam on Friday Night Lights, an NBC television drama. After various shows and exposure within the rock n' roll and folk music community, The Avett Brothers gained the confidence of rock legend Dave Mathews when he announced that the brothers would begin opening for his 2009 spring tour.

In August of 2009, the group was marked as Artist to Watch in 2009 by Rolling Stone Magazine. Although it was not the cover of The Rolling Stone, it was a start of many great experiences to come for the new and emerging folk rock group.

Progression

More musical appearances on television would begin to get the group the exposure they so desired with shows on the Late Show with David Letterman and Late Show with Jimmy Fallon. The album titled I and Love and You would go on to land them their highest spot on the Billboard 200 reaching all the way to number sixteen and standing out at number one for best selling folk albums. From the band's My Space page, the group stated they were excited to announce that they would be playing in the 2010 Bonnaroo Music Festival, which is an annual music festival featuring rock n' roll, folk music, and many other genres for existing as well as new and emerging artists.

From the ever growing town of Concord, North Carolina, the group began small and relatively unsuccessful during their early stages. The abandonment of one project to create an original sound proved to be the swing that the group needed. The classic example of hard work, dedication, and ambition could be labeled as the group's initial calling card where as they never abandoned their hopes and dreams. As of now, the group has produced over twelve albums starting with their self titled The Avett Brothers and leading up to their final album I and Love and You.

They will be currently touring with Dave Mathews form most of the spring and are said to be toying around with a new album which will be discussed later this year. No matter when or what the next project may be, the group will keep to their musical roots and step out of the mainstream, creating a sound unique to their own.
