Tha Dogg Pound

I was very grateful that we could put a positive expression over the sample because we grew up on Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and Teddy Pendergrass.  And for us to put a positive expression over that music, for anyone who's had a lost one or has unfortunately done time in the nasty system, made it that much better.

Combining Talents

Rappers Daz Dillinger and Kurupt combined their skills and creativity in 1992 to created Tha Dogg Pound, or Dogg Pound Gangstas.  Under the Death Row Records label, the label to which each  later signed for their solo work, the two began to record.  Their rap debut as a duo appears on Dr. Dre's album, The Chronic.  They collaborated on a number of singles on this album.

They released their debut album, Dogg Food, in 1995.  Due to controversial lyrics, the album's release was delayed for three months.  Once officially released, it sold 277,500 copies in the first week, and peaked at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and the Hot R&B/Rap charts.  Ultimately, the album certified double platinum, but did not match the success of Death Records' previous two releases from Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.  The single release, What Would You Do? was  a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

Gaining Fame

For the next few years after Dogg Food, Kurupt and Daz were working on their own solo endeavors; one by one, they left Death Row Records.  Suge Knight, of Death Row, claimed legal rights to the name, Tha Dogg Pound, and the duo changed their name to Dogg Pound Gangstas.  They released their 2001 album, Dillinger & Young Gotti, on Daz's independent label, Gangsta Advisory Records.  In 2002, Knight released a collection of unreleased tracks from the duo, which infuriated the rappers.

Over the next eight years, Tha Dogg Pound released six more albums, demonstrating varying levels of success. In addition to these, the duo released an extended play recording, entitled Let's Ryde 2Night, digitally, as an exclusive for iTunes.  Fans seeking this album are able to download the entire set, or specific tracks, in mp3 format.

Here and Now

The newest album, 100 Wayz, from Tha Dogg Pound is due to be released sometime in 2010.  The album after that has  already been named:  Westcoast Aftershocc.  They are also working on another iTunes exclusive album, Dillinger & Gotti III – Get Paid, and a collaboration with Pete Rock, tentatively named Pete Rock & Tha Dogg Pound.  In addition to all of this, they have a compilation album due in 2010, and fans may reorder their copy at the website for Tha Dogg House.
