Overseas Adventure
Jack Black and Kyle Gass met while in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1989 while both performing a play by Tim Robbins and Adam Simon called Carnege. Although their first meeting was rocky, the two would go on to create on of the most random but entertaining lyrical rock groups of the twentieth century.
Rocky Beginning
Upon their first meeting, Gass will admit that he was a bit intimidated by Jack Black, mainly because of his title as lead musician within the theatre group. Eventually, they would become friends and Gass would trade skills where Gass would teach Black the guitar and Gass would teach Black how to act. Neither knew at the time what history had in store for them.
After playing at clubs in and around Los Angeles and touring here and there, the two got their break in 1997 when they produced a pilot for HBO of three half hour episodes of Tenacious D. HBO would go on to offer them a deal but under the conditions that Gass and Black were only to write songs and they could not produce or write skits. This did not sit well with the duo so the two began formulating another plan to make a movie.
Moving On
The two continued to write music and used many that stemmed from their short lived stint on HBO and would eventually go on to open for performers such as the Foo Fighters and Beck. Tenacious D released their first album on Epic Records' label in 2001. It should be noted that Jack Black's acting career had taken off during this time and he had gained prominence within the screen acting world. His recognition greatly influenced the name of Tenacious D helped to further their musical cause.
Tenacious D, their first studio album, gained small recognition with fans and some will again relate this to the name Jack Black had made for himself while acting. Interestingly enough, the album was critically rated although it took a while for critics to break down and commit to rating something that was not the norm for even rock n' roll. Their style consisted of lyrical style poetry with the touch of older bands such as Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden.
The two played well together and there was no doubt of either one's talent as musicians, but the music was also more geared towards comedy. That was their style as anyone who has ever heard a Tenacious D album can second. Many were also critical of their flagrant use of profanity and sexually deviant phrases. This caused a riff between the music world where some would go on to claim that this was not truly music and the two were giving the rock n' roll world a bad name. However, many fans would disagree and the two continued to gain in popularity.
Second Release
Their next release held in high regard the single Tribute. The song was about what the duo claimed to be the greatest song in the world. In the song, the group sing about having to sing the greatest song in the world to escape a deal with the devil. The single also inspired a music video, which amazingly got voted as one of the top five videos of all time as per the readers of Kerang magazine. Another video, which again got the critics all but impressed, was for the single Fuck Her Gently. The video portrayed Black and Gass as to angelic figures singing about the fruits of gentle love.
Remember the Movie
Finally, in October 2003 Black announced that the two had finished creating the screenplay for The Pick of Destiny, which was a fictional portrayal of the formation of the group Tenacious D. The soundtrack for the movie The Pick of Destiny and would also be their second studio album. Unfortunately, the film got very little attention and has been designated as somewhat of a cult classic, it just isn't a classic.
A quote from the L.A. Times suggested the movie may be better enjoyed with an "herbal supplement" form which he was not referring to a cup of hot tea. Although the film The Pick of Destiny was not a major hit by any stretch, the duo maintained their following which still are there of the present. Black continued his acting career and later anounced that there would be a new album out although some have rumored Gass did not hold his same position.
Black at first said the album would be release four years later in 2010 but later revised that date and pushed it back to 2012. This was just their style as one would understand after listening to their music that the world was their playground. Nothing was considered sacred and anything that could do to offset the norm was considered fair game. One can find many of their songs on various websites across the internet while some may even be available as free music downloads.
