Taking Back Sunday - a talent kaleidoscope

"The end product is better than we ever imagined."

From the beginning the lineup has been fluid but the name changes has not kept the band from writing tunes that draw fans from pop/rock, punk and emo corners to them over the past decade. Like unique pieces in a kaleidoscope each new artist introduced has created a slightly different mosaic but the result has consistently been ear catching.

Taking Back Sunday Coming out of Long Island

Eddie Reyes continues to be the thread that binds the Taking Back Sunday lineup back to its musical inception in 1999 when Steven DeJoseph as drummer, Jesse Lacey as Bass guitarist and singer, Antonio Longo as lead singer and John Nolan as guitarist and singer formed the original TBS group. The New York based group played locally and worked on developing material for an extended play demo. The legacy of the ever changing lineup began when even before the 5 track EP recording was completed DeJoseph and Lacey left the band. Mark O'Connell and Adam Lazzara respectively replaced them and the bands first recording started to be distributed by hand at gigs after February 2001.

During 2001 lead singer Antonio Longo left and Adam Lazzara shifted from bass and backup singer to Longo's center stage spot. Shaun Cooper joined the group as the bass player. Their hybridization of rock, punk, emo and pop was energetic and fun. A year of touring with various punk and emo bands earned them a contract with Independent label Victory Records and their first studio album was released in March 2002 almost exactly a year after their EP was released.

Hitting the road hard

Tell All Your Friends received favorable attention in the alternative rock circles ranking #8 on the Top Independent Albums chart and #9 on Heatseekers. The group spent a great deal of 2002 and 2003 touring the country and promoting their debut album.

While on the road with Taking Back Sunday John Nolan wrote a number of songs and in 2003 he left the band to pursue production of his tunes. Shaun Cooper also left the band at that time which threw the groups 2003 fall touring schedule in to question. As fate would have it, alternative rock band Breaking Pangea disbanded and Fred Mascherino was free to bring his guitar and vocal talent to the slim TBS line up. Matt Rubano left Schleigho and came on board to fill Cooper's place as bass player and the group continued with a new chemistry mix once again.

Lazzara and Mascherino delivered a vocal sound that distinguished TBS as a commercially successful emo band with the release of Where You Want to Be in the summer of 2004. Decade Under the Influence was the best received single from the album. After its release the band headlined a North American tour that was consistently sold out. Hitting the Billboard Top 200 chart at number three attracted mainstream labels and Warner Bros. signed Taking Back Sunday in June of 2005 marking their graduation into the big leagues.

Major shuffles

August 2005 saw the band working on album number three with producer Eric Valentine. This body of work was darker and more aggressive reflecting more of the live performance energy the band was known for. Louder Now was released in April 2006 and went to number two on the Billboard Charts. What's It Feel Like to Be a Ghost?, Liar, and Twenty-Twenty Surgery and Makedamnsure were released in 2006.

Membership fluctuation continued to haunt the band when Fred Mascherino decided to pursue his solo career and left TBS in October 2007. Mascherino's replacement came in the form of Matt Fazzi. Excitement has been generated by Fazzi's addition to the group which is reflected the name of album number four New Again. Build up in 2009 included free music downloads every Monday on their MySpace page. A digital album, Live From Bamboozle '09, was released in August of 2009.
