Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh were friends for along time as they grew up in the same area in Long Beach in California. Bradley Nowell joined the band and they played their first gig in 1988. They continued playing concerts in California, creating a huge following. After years of live shows, the band released their very first album titled “40 Oz to Freedom” in 1992 on Bradley Nowell’s record company Skunk Records. It received mixed reviews and only managed moderate success on the charts peaking at No. 146 on the US charts. However since 1992, the album has sold over 2 million copies. The music was punk, surf rock influences and even a dash of hip hop beats thrown in for good measure.
The popularity of the band grew as radio stations in LA started playing the music and especially the song “Date Rape”. The band started extensively touring largely based on polarity of this song. The bands tour started to affect the relationships within the band as Nowell drug habit started to slowly take a grip on his life. In a bizarre turn of events, the dogs also used to travel with the band which resulted in many fans being bitten.
The Beginning of the End
The band released their second album in 1994. Titled “Robbin’ the Hood”, the record made little impact and did not even chart on the US Billboard. Though again over the years the album has managed to be certified Gold. They went on to headline their very tour called Sno Core tour. During the shows, Nowell would sometimes not be able to play due to heavy intoxication.

The album released in July of that year and was a he success. It peaked at No.13 on the US album charts and has since then sold 5 million copies. Unfortunately the band broke up after the death of Nowell. The music was a mixture of ska/punk and reggae.
A reunited Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh tried to tour with a new singer in 2009 calling themselves Sublime. But it was blocked by Nowell’s family.
