But mixtapes are just basically for the ‘hood. So when I’m on mixtapes, basically I pretty much try to “go-in.” And I’m not too worried about it being too negative, too positive, or if it’s too this or too that. I just do it. I just do whatever I felt that night. So I’m just going to do it, and I leave it at that.
The Early Years
David Styles was born in Queens and raised in Yonkers, New York. He began rapping with Jadakiss and Sheek in 1994, and adopted the stage name, Styles P. The three signed with Bad Boy Records and formed a group called The LOX, an acronym for “Living Off Xperience.” They released one album with Bad Boy Records, then left the label with great fanfare, and signed with Interscope Records.
Styles P released his debut solo album in 2002, entitled A Gangster and a Gentleman. The album includes a number of samplings from various artists, including Al Green, Aretha Franklin, and Toto. A Gangster and a Gentleman peaked at #6 on the Billboard Top 200 and at #2 on Billboard Top R&B/hip hop charts. The first single, Good Times peaked at #6 on the R&B/hip hop chart, but his second single, My Life, did not fare so well.
Building on a Strong Foundation
With a solid fan base from his work with The Lox, his mixtapes, and the success of his first solo album, Styles P released his second album, Time is Money. The album climbed to #79 on the Billboard Top 200, but peaked at #19 in the Billboard Top R&B/hip hop charts and at #10 on the Top Rap Albums charts. Singles, Can You Believe It?, I'm Black, and Favorite Drug were all released as singles from this CD.
Super Gangster (Extraordinary Gentleman) was released in 2007. It was leaked to the internet weeks before its physical release, and demand for the album and downloads of the track were both high by the time the album was legally available. The album debuted at #51 on the Billboard Top 200 and sold 99,287 copies in its first week.
Here and Now
Both Styles P and The Lox have albums due out in 2010. Styles P's solo effort, The Green Ghost Project was released in February, The album debuted at #52 on the Billboard Top 200. The reunion album from the Lox, New L.O.X. Order is due out later in the year. Also due to be released in 2010 is the film, Just Another Day, about life as a rapper, with Styles P playing a role along with Ja-Rule, Wood Harris, and Jamie Hector.
In addition to his music career, Styles P founded D-Block Records, representing The Lox, Vinny Idol, Arliss Network, 354 Entertainment, and A.P. (About Paper).
Did you know . . .
When Styles P's album, Time is Money, was delayed in being released, the reason given by his representative at D-Block was that “he hadn't beat Super Mario 3 yet.”
Styles P lost his brother in a tragic car accident when he was very young.
His 2002 hit, Good Times, was included on the soundtrack for the 2004 movie, Soul Plane.
