Early Years
Slim Thug was born Jerome Thomas in Houston, Texas. By age 17 he started performing free style rapping at high school parties in Houston. He was always producing mix-tapes right from the start and started a recording contract with Swishahouse Records. Slim Thug soon realized that he was quite good at producing his own mix-tapes and the financial gains that were possible. He left Swishahouse records and started his own independent label. Slim Thug was also a smart businessman at a very young age and after he started his record company, he also bought two recording studios and other real estate. He was achieving massive financial gains after selling the mix-tapes.
The Debut
Slim Thug first gained widespread recognition after collaborating with fellow label mate and rapper Mike Jones on the single “Still Tippin’”
This collaboration brought him into the attention of record executives from Interscope Records. He signed with them and started recording his first album. “Already Platinum” was released in July 2005. The record label wanted to ensure a successful debut therefore roped in several producers to produce the album. The ensemble cast included The Neptunes, Jazzie Pha and Cool n’ Dre. The album also featured collaboration with Jay-Z. The single “Like a Boss” delivered in the aggressive style gained massive interest due to the bizarre parody of the video by The Lonely Island comedy show. The single “3 Kings” reached N.78 on the RnB charts. Several other singles also charted and album peaked at No.2 on the US album charts and managed to sell 500,000 copies to be certified Gold.
The Sophomore and Other Collaborations
Slim Thug appeared collaborated with several other artists that include Beyonce in 2005 which lead to a No.1 single. He also featured on the single “Luxurious” with Gwen Stefani for her album Love Angel Music Baby, reached No.21 on the charts.
He continued to release mix tapes and had released over 20 of them since 2000. He also made many guest appearances for other artist such as Pharrell, Busta Rhymes and M’ya. He started recording his second album for Interscope records and released it in Mar 2009. “Bosses of all Bosses” debut at No.15 on the US album charts and No.4 on the RnB charts. The album received critical praise though it failed to make an impact on the charts and was considered a commercial disappointment.
He will be releasing his third album tentatively titled “The Thug Show” in 2010.
