“I'm 29. I'm not 21 anymore and I'm not looking to please anybody anymore, except the Lord. So those kind of things, I'm beginning to be a little more vocal and outspoken about it.” John Cooper
Skillet is known for their versatile Christian music. They are an alternative style band, specializing in Christian music. They are made up from four band members including bass player and lead vocals, John Cooper, his wife Korey Cooper who plays the guitar and keyboards, another guitar player, Ben Kasica, and the drum player Lori Peters. This is the second line up of band members.
Cooper formed an earlier group consisting of himself, guitarist Ken Steorts, and drummer Trey McClurkin. The earlier band members did not work out in the end, but Cooper wanted to continue making the music that he loved, so he formed the second line up.
Starting with the First Line up
They made their first debut with the original line up band in 1996, releasing a self titled LP. In 1998, they brought the song, Hey You, I Love Your Soul out for release. They contributed three of their tracks to the Ardent Worship in 2000 making their live compilation.
The band split up due to various reasons, but Cooper wanted to keep making music so he came up with another group of people who would now be known as Skillet. They have a mix of old school rock, putting in a bit of today’s alternative to make their music one of the best out there among fans.
Moving on to Another Line up Band
The new line up band came out in 2001, producing more songs than before. In 2001 they released Alien Youth for the general public. They came out with Collide in 2003, this became their best selling song to date. It also earned them a Grammy nomination for the song as well. The record was supported by bands such as Shinedown and Saliva throughout various tours around the country.
Some of the tracks on the new album such as The Last Night and Say Goodbye have more of a up to spirits potential for everyone who listens to them rather than a depressing monotone that some alternative music tends to have. They have come a long way to get this far with one of their hits out on the air. They have tried to get record companies to realize their potential but many of them passed them by.
Adding More Tone to the Band
In their new records, they added new sounds within their songs. They brought in various piano-based and progressive influenced instruments. They wanted to put a new feel and vibe to their new records. They came out with their first single,Whispers. They tried to weave the sound in with the vocals to create a more mystifying atmosphere for their sounds.
Better Than Drugs is one of the songs that gives the most aggressive display of all of them. They add a tough display with stronger sounds than the other tracks they have put out. The piano is played by his wife in most of the tracks on various records.
The Meaning of Their Songs
Many of the tracks deal with topical issues, and expand to socially conscious ideas. Some of the songs cover personal struggle, and life experiences. They have done inspirational tracks that allow the listener to get through their troubles by thinking that life is worth living. This is portrayed in The Last Night. The Older I Get is a personal song about Cooper’s life after his mother passed away.
They try to give positive messages in all of their songs. They are trying to reach out to the fans, and give them a bigger message through their music. They want fans to think more of their lives, and get back on the right track past all of the bad influences in the world. They want to give their listeners a more ideal approach to life when listening to their music.
