We had no time to think about it. We were just playing all the time. We would accept any offer to play a show because we were just amazed people wanted us to. We loved it and thought it might end at any time. I guess it still could.
Getting Started
An alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California, Siversun Pickups is made up of a group of friends who had played together in various bands or knew each other through friends. They played small local clubs and lounges, drawing crowds and growing a fan base. Their extended play recording, Pikul, was released in 2005, and attracted even
Music from the EP was available on line as well as in the stores, prompting an eager fan base to follow the activities of the band. They toured the United States and parts of more attention. The EP had seven named tracks, plus seventeen unnamed tracks, each less than forty-five seconds long. Canada to promote the EP, playing primarily lounges and festivals. They played five dates in a row at Spaceland in Las Angeles in August of 2005.
Building Momentum
In 2006, Silversun Pickups released their first full length album, entitled Carnavas. The album peaked at #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers, #5 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums, and #80 on the Billboard Top 200. Upon release of the album, they toured in the UK and Ireland, playing Ireland at the time Carnavas was being released. They opened for The Foo Fighters and in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Dublin, Ireland.
The album spawned four singles. Two of these, Lazy Eye and Thought Out Twinkles hit the Top Ten in modern rock hits. The latter of the two is on the soundtrack for the video game, Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground. It is also available for download for the games, Rock Band and Rock Band 2.
Here and now
Silversun Pickups released their most recent album, Swoon, in 2009. The album debuted at #7 on the Billboard Top 200, and sold 42,000 copies in its first week. The album was available for pre-order on iTunes. Pre-orders came with automatic free downloads of the bonus track, Currency of Love. Also in 2009, the band performed on MTV Unplugged, playing four singles: Catch and Release, Panic Switch, Lazy Eye, and Well Thought Out Twinkles.
At the end of 2009, Silverspun Pickups were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. They supported the band, Placebo in their 2009 tour and are currently on an extensive nationwide tour with Muse.
Did you know . . .
Silversun Pickups were originally known as “A Couple of Couples.”
Their 2009 nomination caused controversy because the band had already been successful in 2008; this would make them ineligible for a Best New Artist Award.
Their single, Growing Old is Getting Old, was featured in an episode of the series, One Tree Hill, during episode 7. Their song, Sort Of, was featured in the pilot episode of the television show, The Vampire Diaries.
