Early Life
Shawty Lo was born Carlos Walker and was raised in a government housing project in Atlanta, Georgia. He had a very disturbing up bringing and by the time he was teenager he was selling drugs on the street and often getting caught by the law. He has also confessed that he has mugged people. By age 17 Carlos had already become a father and over the years he is the father of 8 daughters and 2 sons.
He spent almost 10 years in crime selling drugs and petty crime; after a few busts he decided to make a mark in the music business. He started appearing on shows and local events calling him self Shawty Lo. In 2003 he also started his own record label called D4L Records. The label was in partnership with other rappers such as Stuntman and Fabo. Interestingly enough most of his associates are from the same housing project in Atlanta where he grew up.
The Music Maker
In 2004 he self financed and released his first single “Betcha Can’t Do it Like Me”, the single received a lot of local attention and was even a minor hit in Atlanta. However Shawty Lo was back in his old ways selling drugs to people. He was busted for trafficking in cocaine and was incarcerated for 1 year. While still in prison he released his second single “Laffty Taffy” which became a major hit on the charts reaching at the summit on the US Hot 100 singles charts. The video shot in a strip club created a lot of waive but it was the speculation over the meaning of the title that created a lot of attention for the rapper.
The First Solo
In Feb 2008, Shawty Lo released his first solo album called “Units in the City” a possible reference to the number cop units in the city. The album peaked at No.14 on the US Billboard charts and No.2 on the RnB Rap charts. The debut album has fallen short of any Gold certification by selling less than even 200,000 copies. The album also featured other major label artists who are also Atlanta natives.
Feuds with T.I.
In 2008, Shawty Lo was involved in an argument which made a lot of tabloid press. Both Artists started writing music to spite the other. They wrote lyrics which ridiculed the other. In Nov 2008 award show the entourage of the both the artists had a huge tussle with each other which prompted them being thrown out of the hall.
The feud was over as T.I and Shawty appeared together on stage.
