City of Atlanta
The band Sevendust formed in the year of 1994 in the ever growing city of Atlanta, Georgia and were first under the name Tomorrow’s Pain. The group underwent a number of name changes during their first inception until finally settling on the name Sevendust later in the year. The group got off to a rocky start due to name changes and internal conflicts between band members but would settle themselves into the world of alternative rock n’ roll and gain a fan base that would solidify their efforts.
First Release
The band garnered the effort to produce their first album in April of 1997, which was a self titled album, Sevendust, with a heavy drumming and grinding guitar. Some would note that even the vocals were by far very angry and aggressive. Black, on of the singles off of the album, became their signature opening song for almost every concert up until 2004. From this album, the band would gain enough support from local clubs and festivals that they were invited to the Ozzfest Tour in 1998.
That same year in 1998, their self titled Sevendust, would achieve gold status. After the tour and a short break, the band would go into the studio to produce their second album release called Home. This was their first success as the album would peak at number nine teen on the Billboard 200 Chart. The band would go on to appear at Woodstock 99’ as well as the Late Night with Conan O’brien Show near the end of the year. The group would also go the Tattoo the Earth tour with up and coming groups such as Slipknot in early 2000.
Career Success
With their green horns behind them, the band was now poised for success and had gained a lot of exposure over the last couple of years. They were back in the studio in 2001 and would release Animosity, their third album in November. The two singles off of the album Praise and Angel’s Son, would gain them commercial success as both would make it onto the charts in the top twenty five slots.
The album would eventually be certified gold and become a great success, unfortunately, the band was in for hard times as over the next two years they would lose a family member and a friend of the band. The group dusted themselves off began to write again, producing their fourth album called Seasons, which would sell sixty eight thousand copies in its first week on the market.
Sevendust thought it was time to release a DVD live album around this time and in 2004 the release of Southside Double-Wide: Acoustic Live was released to fans worldwide and also contained the cover of the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt, which was dedicated to the death of Johnny Cash.
Rocky Road
After switching to the record label WineDark in 2005, the band was poised to release its next album Next although it seemed there would be some delays. The new record label began to falter and eventually would leave the band high and dry having to hustle to find distribution for the album. 2006 saw the bankruptcy of Sevendust as little did they know that their accountant had failed to pay taxes on some of their income.
At one point it was estimated that the band owed more than one million dollars. In the end, the group would change producers and eventually find their feet back under them once again. Fans can follow the band on their official website and some of their music may be available as a free music download.
