Sepultura

Fear in my subconscious terror invades my speech…

South American Born

The thrash metal rock group Sepultura would come from the city of Belo Horizonte in Brazil. The founding members Max and Igor Cavelara would go on to produce some of the new sounds of the new age of thrash metal in the category of metal core of rock n’ roll. The brothers would gain the influence of early rock n’ roll groups such as AC/DC, Judas Priest, and Ozzy Osbourne and would go on to use these influences to create a heavy hitting sound as they began to achieve fame throughout the world.

First Albums

Sepultura would produce their first album after many months of touring the country of Brazil. Before they were to produce their first full length album, they would share an EP with the Brazillian band Overdose that was called Bestial Devastation. It wouldn’t be until 1986 before the group would release its debut album called Morbid Visions, which many consider the first of the pure death metal records. The album was released in the United States under the record label New Renaissance Records, who would later be heavily criticized by the media for signing such an act to its label.

However, this contract would prove to pay off for both Sepultura and the record company when the single Troops of Doom began to get airplay on hardcore and heavy metal radio. Their second studio album came in late 1987 under the name of Schizophrenia where their style had changed slightly from pure death metal to more of the popular style of thrash. This would gain them an amount of success that would lead to their signing with Roadrunner Records, who would go on to distribute the album world wide gaining the group a more international audience.

A third album called Beneath the Remains would solidify the group and gain them enough attention to embark on a tour through Europe as well as the United States. The group had then decided it was time to move to the United States and settled on the state of Arizona, where they would go on to produce more albums in the up coming years.

Later Successes

The group’s fifth album called Chaos A.D. saw its release in 1993 and it indicated a change in style once more for the group as it deviated from death metal to hardcore punk and industrial. The review of the album by Allmusic stated that the release of Chaos A.D. was significant in the fact that it was one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. Later in the mid 1990’s the band would see internal conflicts and the departure of Max Cavalera at the end of a tour in the United Kingdom; however, there have been no concrete comments as to why he left the group.

With a new frontman, the group would produce their sixth studio album called Against that was released in 1998. The band earned more success from this album; however, their next album called Nation would not fare well at all selling very little copies and would be their last album with Roadrunner Records.

Present

The group would release their tenth studio album in 2006 called Dante XXI, which is considered a concept album based upon The Divine Comedy. The group would later see the reunion of member Max Cavalera and Igor and go on tour with Sepultura in the 2007 tour called Ozzfest although this actually did not occur. The group has released another album titled A-Lex in January of 2009, which has been somewhat of a success. The group’s official website can be viewed on the internet and one may find free music downloads available on other websites as well.
