Selena
I lost a lot of my teenagehood but I gained a lot too. I can’t really say that I lost a lot because I got ahead of everyone as far as career and being more mature about business, even though I didn’t know what the heck was going on.
Selena was born in the state of Texas in April of 1971 and would go on to be the most well known Mexican American singer of all time. She has been inundated with awards of the highest honors and her fame was continuing to grow up until her unfortunate death in 1995 when she was murdered by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar. Her birthday was declared Selena Day by President George Bush in 1995.
Her Beginning
Born in the town of Lake Jackson, Texas, Selena was the front for a singing group who performed at her family’s restaurant at the age of six. Although the restaurant ended up closing, the family moved to Corpus Christi where they would perform at any place possible looking for money to get Selena’s career to take off. Success would come at an early age when Selena won Best Female Vocalist in 1987 at the Tejano Music Awards.
After this, she went on to release two albums in 1988 which were called Preciosa and Dulce Amor. From these two albums she would get the attention of Sony Latin Music Division and sign with Capitol record company. During this same time, she also signed a contract with Texas Coca Cola division and became the face on advertisements throughout Texas. She began having concerts that would gain more and more people each time, creating a solid fan base for the Mexican American Singer.
Time Pushes On
With the ushering in of a new decade, the female artist began to focus entirely on her solo career. She released another album titled Ven Conmigo that was written by her brother Abraham Quintanilla who had a great talent for song writing.
After its release, the album gained attention and was the first Mexican American album to achieve the high honor of gold status. During the same time, a woman named Yolando Saldivar came to her father with the idea of creating a fan club for the female singer, which would only attract more attention and bring in more money.
This was considered and eventually Saldivar would become the president of the fan club as well as manager of Selena’s clothing boutiques. Two years later, she released another album in 1992 titled Entre a Mi Mundo that also achieved the honor of going gold. Success in the mainstream was soon to follow when in 1993 she won a Grammy Award for her 1993 album Selena Live under the category of Best Mexican American Performance.
Abrupt and Tragic Ending
The artist would release another album in 1994 where she would win another Grammy in the same category that following year. During this time she also began designing clothing as well and also made a few appearances in some of the Mexican soap operas of the day. The honors and awards continued to come in and Selena began touring across the United States as well as South America.
She would go on to star in a few movies making cameos here and there but still finding the time to make charitable appearances in schools across the country touting the importance of education. Tragedy would come to the singer when she discovered that Yolanda was embezzling money from her many business ventures that were ran by Yolanda. After Selena met with Yolanda to get some tax papers, an argument ensued and Yolanda shot Selena on this tragic morning. She died from loss of blood.
