Jamaican By Birth
Born in Kinston, Jamaica in 1973, Sean Paul would come to the United States and take the hip hop community by storm with his lyrics taking a close look at issues surrounding everyone’s lives. Coming from a very affluent background of swimmers, Sean Paul himself played on Jamaica’s national water polo team since the time he was thirteen until he stopped at the age of twenty one.
After graduation from high school, he went on to attain a post secondary education pursuing a career in business management although history would have another plan of action. Sean Paul would gain the attention of many worldwide in the hip hop community and in his first few albums sell millions of copies of his work. He is active within his own country of Jamaica as well as the United States and has worked for causes to help aid others in their daily strife.
The Early Years
During the early 1990’s, Sean Paul began working relentlessly on his music career. By the mid 1990’s, he released his first album titled Stage One in 2000. Released by the record label VP Records, Sean Paul began working with a number of people including Jae Blaze of Blaze Entertainment and went on to release his second album less than one year later called Dutty Rock. From this album, he became known throughout the world as the single titled Get Busy went worldwide and topped the Billboard Top 100. The album went on to eventually sell almost six million copies creating his first multi platinum album.
Light On the Stage
Along with his stage presence, Paul was also doing some appearances on the big screen as well as the televison. In 1998 he made an appearance in the film titled Belly as a performer, which definitely fit his style. After some television and movie appearances, he went back into the studio and began work on his third album, which would eventually be titled The Trinity which was released in September of 2005.
Five hits made it to the U.S. charts including singles such We Be Burnin’, Ever Blazin’, and one of his most popular still today, Temperature, which topped all U.S. charts in its category. During this time he also produced a music video featuring Keyshia Cole and the video ended up in the movie Step Up. From these hit singles, Sean Paul was nominated for Rap Artist of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, and Hot 100 Single of the Year at the Billboard Music Awards in 2006. Honoring his native country, in 2007 he visited his birthplace to perform at the Cricket World Cup.
As the Years Go By
Sean Paul has been more than just a singer and songwriter. He has also been featured on two video games called Def Jam Fight for New York and on the sequel titled Def Jam: Icon. After his many different trips and tours, he went back into the studio to work on his latest album titled Imperial Blaze. This album was released in April of 2009 and features the lead hit single So Fine. This single was featured on Sean Paul’s website as an mp3 music download for all of his die hard fans.
This single had personal meaning to the artist and in an interview for Blues and Soul magazine Paul stated that the album Imperial Blaze actually means, “that thing inside of you that gives you the desire to do whatever you do, and be the best in the world at it.” His new album has twenty tracks that include songs such as So Fine, She Want Me, and Hold My Hand along with many others. All of these songs were posted to his My Space page upon their release.
Charity Works
Sean Paul has done very well in the hip hop music community gaining fame on an international scale. From this fame, he has decided that a part of life is giving back to the many people that helped him get to where he is today, which to him means everyone. The artist Shaggy, Elephant Man, and Sean Paul will hold a concert to benefit Bustamante Hospital for Children.
