Scarface – Raps Prolific MC
Early Years
Scarface was born in Houston, Texas and started rapping at a very early age. He joined the RnB/Hip Hop band Geto Boys around 1986. Along with Willie D and Bushwick Bill, they started playing small venues and gained appeal for their strange dark and morbid lyrics. The songwriting featured horror imagery, psychotic references and necrophilia. The explicit content gave the band a lot of notoriety.
Along with his own solo career, Scarface has managed to be part of the Geto Boys for over 20 years as an active member on their recording and tour performances.
Solo
As solo artist he started recording for a local recording label in Houston. He built his reputation and would go on to sign with Rap-a-Lot records. His first album with the band would be their second release titled “Grip It! On that Other Level” released in 1989. It charted in the US Top 200 album and brought them a huge fan base. The lyrics were quite violent and controversial and therefore radio stations and MTV did not play their music.
He took his stage name from the movie “Scarface”. He released his first solo album titled “Mr. Scarface is Back” which would be certified Gold in the US. The commercial performance overshadowed anything the rap group had done and therefore Scarface became somewhat of a leader of the band
Mainstream Success
In1993 he released “The World is Yours” which was another Gold certified album and his first to reach the No.1 on RnB charts. The album featured the single “Let Me Roll” which was No.2 single on the Rap charts.
In 1994, he returned with “The Diary” which many consider his best work. The songwriting had become darker and used tape mixing in the production. The album debut at No.2 on the charts and started a trilogy of platinum selling albums
Smash Hits
His big success came in 1997 with the release of the album “The Untouchables” which featured his big hit single “Smile”. The album debut at No.1 on the US album and RnB charts in the US. It has been certified platinum. The chart success continued with his third platinum album “My Homies” in 1998. the double album featured Ice Cube.
In addition to being an artist, he also became a coordinated and President of Def jam South records. He is also considered to have mentored future rap superstar Ludacris.
Commercial Decline
Scarface returned with “The Last of the Dying Breed” in Oct 2000. An intensely personal album which was critically acclaimed and it reached No.2 on the rap charts. The album was certified Gold.
However his next few releases seemed to have lacking in spunk. “Balls and My Word” and its album cover which is a direct take of the Scarface movie poster was only minor hit. His next three albums though all charted, yet failed to have any impact.
