She is the only singer in history to hold number one spots on the Dance and Billboard Classical charts simultaneously. She has sold more two million DVDs nearly thirty million albums.
She has danced in troupes that included Hot Gossip and she has released her own disco singles. She has performed in the musical theatre, and partnered with theatre composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. Once divorced from Webber, she was able to become a crossover artist, with a mix pop arrangements and classical vocals.
Starting Out in her Career
Sarah Brightman was born on August 14, 1960. She grew up in Little Gaddesden. She lived in the John O’Gaddesden House within the village. She was the oldest in a family of six kids. The daughter of a businessman, she started to take classes at the Elmhurst School for Dance in Camberley, Surrey. When she was 11, she auditioned at the Arts Educational School successfully. It was a boarding school that specialized in performing arts. She studied dance, mostly working on jazz. When she was 16, she joined the dance group Pan’s People on the BBC series Top of the Pops. She left this to go to Hot Gossip which reached #6 on the UK charts.
While Sarah Brightman was solo, she released more disco singles while with Whisper Records. In 1981, she auditioned for the musical Cats, she got the part of Jemima. She was able to see her first Grammy nomination with the musical Requiem. This was after she married Webber in 1984. In The Phantom of the Opera, the role of Christine was written just for Brightman. Webber and Brightman separated in 1990. She performed in one last play for Webber, and then transferred to Broadway.
Moving on in the Career
Kate sang the song for the Olympic Games in 1992 with Jose’ Carreras titled Amigos Para Siempre. Webber had written the song. She inspired to sing solo, and in 1991 she then went to Germany. She did this to meet with her producer, Frank Peterson. She came out with her first release, Dive in 1993. Her second album with Peterson, Fly released in 1995 led her to become quite popular in Europe. The duet for the Boxing match with Andrea Bocelli was able to see over three million copies just in Germany., and became Germanys best selling single. It went on to sell over five million copies worldwide. The next album, Timeless came out in 1997, and sold 1.4 million copies in the US.
Her fame in the US started to come out around this time. Later albums included Eden in 1998, with mixed reviews. Edensold over 500,000 copies, and was certified Gold, while La Luna sold 873,000 copies. In 2001, she released an album of operatic arias titled Classics. Not long after, she produced yet another album in 2003, Harem. She arranged to work with other singers for the album as well. This album peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 charts. They estimated a total of 333,000 copies sold. All of the albums were accompanied by live tours around the world, Harem grossing over $60 million, and sold 700,000 tickets.
More Recently in her Career
A DVD collection of her music videos was released in October 2006, titled Diva: The Video Collection. In January 2007, she was featured on the series of the prime time BBC show Just the Two of Us. She was then partnered with English cricketer Mark Butcher. They finished in third place. She sang in the Concert for Diana in July 2007, she sang the song All I Ask of You. The concert was broadcast in over 500 million homes in 140 countries. She performed at the 2007 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade; she performed the song The Journey Home.
In January 2008, she released album, Symphony this was her first album in five years. This album sold 31,463 albums in the first week. This album also featured music from other artists as well. She followed the album up with a tour in autumn of 2008. She used virtual and holographic stage sets that have never been used before in the touring concert history. It grossed over $10 million dollars. She was appointed as the Shanghai 2010 World Expo Promotion Ambassador in Britain.
