Saliva
We were all in different bands around town and wanted to get together. We were just the best of the best and finally had the opportunity to get together and do some writing.
Something New
In 1996, in Memphis, Tennessee, a group of friends came together, leaving their respective bands and forming the American rock band, Saliva. They entered the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Grammy Showcase competition, and advanced as far as the final round before being eliminated. This small success was all the encouragement they needed to move forward.
They released their debut album, Saliva. Their initial effort sold over 10,000 copies and attracted the attention of Island Records and ultimately earned them a recording contract. The album contained a mix of rock and rap vocals, setting the band apart from many of their contemporaries.
Building a Foundation
In 2001, the band released their first Island Records album, Every Six Seconds. The album ultimately certified double platinum in 2008. The album hit #1 on Billboard Heatseekers and #56 on the Billboard Top 200. The follow-up to this in 2002, Back into Your System, landed at #19 on the Billboard Top 200, and spawned the singles, Always, Rest in Pieces, and Raise Up. Saliva went on tour in 2003, opening for Kiss and Aerosmith.
Saliva's 2004 album, Survival of the Sickest, marked a move away from rap-rock and toward mainstream and Southern style rock. The single, Razor's Edge, featured vocals by Three Doors Down's vocalist, Brad Arnold. The album certified gold, and peaked at #20 on the Billboard Top 200. Soon after the release, founding guitarist, Chris D'Abaldo announced he was leaving the band. He was replaced with Joseph Montoya, and in 2006, the single, Ladies and Gentlemen was released as a prelude the album, Blood Stained Love Story. Due to the popularity of the single, the album sold 31,000 copies in its first week, but ultimately sold only enough to certify gold.
Here and Now
After their 2008 release, Cinco Diablo, enjoyed only limited commercial success, Saliva began working on a reality television show about life on the road with a rock band, entitled Take That Society. They decided that the reality show route was not suitable to them and who they were; they used the material to record an album by the same name. It is due to be released later in 2010. A dvd with footage shot for the reality show will be included.
A band of the twenty-first century, Saliva utilizes the internet to promote their material, as well as radio play and album sales. Their latest single, Time to Shine, has been released on line and is available for mp3 download purchase. They have posted albums on their MySpace page as well, for streaming. They are currently on tour in the United States.
