SafetySuit

I would say our sound is definitely a melodic rock. It's like rock music that you don't have to hold your ears to. We try to take the best parts of music that's out there and that people enjoy and just put it all into one.

The Beginnings

In 2004, four old friends decided they would try their luck at starting a band.  Doug Brown, Dave Garafolo, Jeremy Henshaw, and Tate Cunningham, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, put together an ensemble called Crew, which later became SafetySuit.

Soon they were playing local venues with crowds of 1,000 people or more.  They decided that in order to grow even more, they would need to move to a city more in touch with the music scene and they chose Nashville.  Once there, they placed their priorities on rehearsing, given that they were unknowns and had no performances scheduled.  They met Greg Archilla, who had worked with Matchbox 20, Collective Soul, and Buck Cherry, and with his help, they recorded an extended play record.

Gaining Momentum

After the EP, SafetySuit began to get gigs in various venues:  nice clubs, dives, theaters.  They were performing two to three times per week.  At one of these gigs, they were spotted by a representative from Universal Records.  They ultimately signed a contract with Universal, keeping Achilla as their producer.

Their debut album, Life Left to Go, was released in 2008.  The album peaked at #173 on Bilboard's Top 200.  Three singles were released from the album, Someone Like You, Stay, and Annie.  The first two of these met with moderate commercial success, with Stay hitting #44 on the Heatseekers chart.  The singles and the album have seen success on line as well with frequent hits at their website and requests for mp3 downloads of their songs.  The band toured through 2009 with 3 Doors Down and Hinder.

What's Next

SafetySuit is currently on tour with the band, Parachute.  In April of this year, the band will be performing on the VH1 Best Cruise Ever.  Obviously, they have 2010 pretty much booked.  A date is not available for the band's next album yet.  They are still releasing singles from their first endeavor.

In April of 2009, SafetySuit's single, Stay, was #1 on the VH1 Top 20 Countdown, indicating the mainstream success the band was enjoying and offering an omen of good things to come.  The band attributes much of their success to the long-time friendship they had all enjoyed when they first came together, and the trust that comes with that.

Did you know . . .

  1. SafetySuit's first performance was for a Battle of the Bands contest, which they won.

  2. The title of their album, Life Left to Go, is based on a track on the album that is about suicide.  It is meant to be encouragement that there is still “life left to go” from wherever you are right now.

  3. Their song, Anywhere but Here, was featured in the television series, Kyle XY.
