Sade’s music has inspired lovers all over the world. The jazz based soft soul with pop sensitivities and of course that incredible voice sets the mood. Her deep sensual voice has mesmerized fans for the last three decades or so. The band named after the lead singer has sold a staggering 50 million albums worldwide. Her enduring charisma and sultry looks have only added to the popularity of the band. The music has remained pretty much the same creating a romantic ambiance and sexual imagery.
The Formation
The band was formed in 1982, when Nigerian born Sade Adu, Stuart Matthewman and Paul Spencer Denman started to put together a band and writing their own songs. In 1983 Andrew Hale joined the band and they started to call themselves Sade. By the end of 1983 they were playing at clubs in London and New York. They signed with Portrait Records which was later acquired by Epic Records.
Mainstream Breakthrough
The band released their first album titled “Diamond Life” in 1984 which peaked at No.4 on the UK charts. The album also broke into the US where it matched the sales of UK. The debut album went on to sell nearly 10 million copies largely due to the single “Smooth Operator”. The signature song and the accompanying video were massive global hits.
After the tour in support of the first album, Sade started recording the follow-up. The album “Promise” debut straight into the top of the album charts both sides of the Atlantic. Sade went on to win the Best New Artist award at the Grammies in 1986. Success continued with the hugely popular world tour.
The Mysterious Girl
“Stronger the Pride” in 1988 continued the success with the title track becoming hit across the world. “Love Deluxe” in 1992 had a semi-nude Sade on the cover. The album containing the single “No Ordinary Love”, the track was a slow and sensuous love song. The album sold 4 million copies in the US.
Sade Adu then went on a long hiatus and only returned in 2000 with a performance at the MOBO awards. The comeback performance created major speculation that a new album was on the cards.
