I didn't plan on being a comedian. I didn't plan on getting married and I didn't plan on having kids, but I did all those things.
The Early Years
Rodney Carrington is a stand-up comedian, actor, and country music artist. He studied theater at Kilgore College in Texas and performed comedy acts in local venues and on radio programs in the early and mid 1990s. His debut album, Hangin' With Rodney, was released in 1998. The album, recorded with Mercury Records, contained comedy sketches and original country songs. It peaked at #73 on the Billboard Country chart.
In 2000, he moved to Capitol Records and released Morning Wood, which fared better than its predecessor. The album ranked in the Top 20, and his single, More of a Man, was his first charting single, peaking at #71 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks. His live album, Live: C'mon Laugh You Bastards, released in 2001, did not chart.
Growing a Career
In 2004, he released Greatest Hits, which peaked at #11 on the country charts and #5 on the comedy chart. Also in 2004, he began starring in a sit-com called Rodney. The show lasted for two seasons. In 2007, he released King of the Mountains, which demonstrated his growing popularity by peaking at #2 on the comedy chart. The following year, he played a role in the movie, Beer for My Horses, with Toby Keith, Ted Nugent, Mac Davis, Willie Nelson, and David Allan Coe.
In 2009, in an effort to release a more radio-friendly album, Rodney Carrington released El Nino Loco, an album made up entirely of country music singles, with no comedy tracks. The album peaked at #19 on the country charts, and was produced in part by Toby Keith. Although it is an all-music album, there are plenty of instances of comedy included, and the album appeared on the Comedy charts
