The Early Years

Robert Kelly Thomas was born on February 14, 1972 in Landstuhl, West Germany. Since he was a young boy, he wanted to be a singer. He was the lead singer of the band, Matchbox Twenty for more than 10 years and he was also in the band Tabitha’s Secret. After countless number one hits like, “Unwell,” “How Far We’ve Come,” “Mad Season,” and many more, Thomas decided to try a solo career. He is an accomplished songwriter, who as won three Grammy Awards for his contributions for the song “Smooth,” the triple-platinum Carlos Santana album, Supernatural. Rob Thomas is also credited to have worked with artists such as Mick Jagger, Daughtry, Pat Green, Willie Nelson and Marc Anthony, just to name a few. He was awarded the Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004. Known as Rob Thomas, he has been credited as one of the most influential songwriters of all time.

Doing his own thing…

After a rewarding career as the lead singer for Matchbox Twenty, Thomas ventured into a solo project and released his debut album, Something to Be in 2005. This album was an instant success and reach #1 on the Billboard 200. The first single for his debut album, “Lonely No More,” went to #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the single, “Ever The Same,” was certified gold. This album went platinum in the U.S, Canada, and double platinum in Australia. Some skeptics said that he was not as entertaining as a solo artist and his album did not live up to the Matchbox Twenty standards. Despite the criticism, that following summer, Thomas started his first solo tour, and later he toured with Toby Lightman and Jewel. Thomas partnered with Disney to create, “Little Wonders,” which was in the animation film, Meet the Robinson. This song also peaked at #5 on the Hot Adult Contemporary charts.

In 2007, Matchbox Twenty, along with their lead man, released, Exile on Mainstream. While on tour with Matchbox Twenty, Thomas would perform some of his original songs from his solo album. He received huge responses from everywhere the group toured. Inspired by the success of his band and wanting to create another solo project, Thomas released his follow up album on June 30, 2009, which he titled Cradlesong. He released the singles, “Someday” and “Her Diamonds,” helped the album go platinum in Australia for the second time. It is rumored that he may be working on a third solo album, but in the meantime Thomas will continue to write songs for Matchbox Twenty and other aspiring artists.

Rob Thomas has been married to his wife, Marisol, since 1999. The Sidewalk Angels Foundation is a non-profit organization, created by Rob Thomas and his wife, that is dedicated to providing services to people of impoverished communities, to offer affordable healthcare alternatives and care for animals that have been mistreated or abused. The program partners with other charities in all the major cities of America to help people find local aid and services. Thomas has also participated in various charities and fundraising events.
