Entering the Rap World
Rick Ross was born William Leonard Roberts II. Very little is known about his early life, something which he has managed to keep private. Media frenzy broke out when it was revealed that Rick Ross was in fact working as a correctional officer at a prison in Florida. Initially he vehemently denied it but with overwhelming evidence including a photograph of him in the officer’s uniform – Rick Ross finally admitted to his past. In 2005 he signed with a local with Suave House records he moved on to join Slip-n-Slide records which was part of the Def Jam records since 2006.
The Debut
Rick Ross released his first album in 2006 titled “Port of Miami”. It has been widely claimed that the name of the album is referenced to the fact that Miami port is the entry point of cocaine arriving in America. The first single hustling about the drug dealing lifestyle references from Manuel Noriega the Panama dictator and drug lord Pablo Escobar to the drug networks in Miami and other part of the US. The single peaked at No. 54 on the Hot 100 US singles charts; the album debuting at No.1 on the mainstream US album charts. The record has sold over 500,000 copies and therefore has been certified Gold.
The Success Continues
The next album “Trilla” was released in May 1999, the first single featured R.Kelly peaked at No.53 on the US RnB charts. The album went straight into the top of the US album charts just like its predecessor. The songs on the album featured several artists such as Nelly and Jay Z. There was heavy sampling on the album and it even used excerpts from the movie Scarface
No.1 Trilogy Completed
While there was a clash of egos happening with 50 Cents who took out videos insulting Rick Ross. 50 Cent even interviews one of mothers of Rick Ross’s children who also confirmed that Rick Ross was a correctional officer.
Rick Ross created his own music label called Maybach Music Group. He released his album under the label titled “Deeper than Rap”. The album was a smash No.1 debut on the US mainstream rock charts which completed a trilogy of No.1 albums. The album released in Apr 1999 has received overwhelming praise from the rap critics and media. Despite the magnificent debut and critical praise it still did not manage to sell 500,000 copies
Rick Ross is currently recording his fourth album to be released in the summer of 2010
