Relient K has created a lot of buzz for being one of the rare Christian bands which have broken into the mainstream charts. They have sold nearly 2 million albums in the US. The bands music can be considered pop-punk with a lot of acoustic and piano layers. The band has also enjoyed a lot of successful live shows and has played concerts all over the world. The songwriter features many references to God and Jesus. Despite their very Christian music the band has always stated that they believe in religious equality and have performed with other bands that are not Christian.
The Early Years
Relient K was formed in 1998 by singer songwriter Matt Thiessen, bass player Brian Pittman and their friend Matt Hoopes on lead guitar. The three of them were studying together in Malone College in the town of Canton, Ohio. In 1998 they started recording their songs on a demo which brought them into the attention of a local record label which was run by a Toby McKeehan. The band recorded an EP before going on to record their first full length self-titled album. The album was released in 2000 though it did not chart it created a lot of buzz.
The Rise of Relient K
After a few line up changes the band released their second album “The Anatomy of the Tongue and Cheek” in 2001. The album’s music filled with pop-culture references brought them a lot of recognition in the Christian rock scene. The band set about touring small venues to gain their audience. The album has gone to sell 500,000 copies certifying it Gold.
The next album “Two Lefts Don’t Make a Right… but Three do” was their commercial breakthrough into the mainstream, peaking at No. 38 on the mainstream US charts. Relient K even released single “Getting Into You” which charted on the Christian charts. The album also went on to win a Grammy nomination and was their second consecutive Gold certified album;
The Crossover Success
The 2004 follow-up certified their cross over commercial appeal. “Mmhmm” reached No.15 on the charts and was their third Gold selling album. It featured two Gold selling albums “Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" and “Be My Escape”. Relient K continued tour and in 2007 released “Five Scores and Seven Years Ago” which sold well enough to debut at No.6 on the US mainstream charts.
In 2009, “Forget and Not Slow Down” did receive massive critical praise but failed to sell commercially
Did You Know: Relient K covered the Bangles song “Manic Monday” for the compilation album Punk Goes 80’s
Did You Know: The name of the band comes from the Plymouth Reliant K car. The band changed the name to avoid any copyright infringement.
Did You Know: In June 2007 the bands touring bus caught fire due to an oil spill, however luckily no one was injured but they lost a lot of equipment
