Reel Big Fish
A ska song isn’t a real good ska song unless it has a hip hop breakdown.
California Born
The group Reel Big Fish got its start in the city of Huntington Beach, California where it would begin its musical career in what was said to be the third and final wave of the ska music genre. They would debut with their first album called Everything Sucks that would land them a deal with Mojo Records.
Starting Up
Reel Big Fish would become one of the last groups to conform to the style of ska style music which had waned in popularity when the group was first starting. The style of music had only a small cult following and had led to many failing albums for other once popular bands. Their first album was called Everything Sucks, which gained very little attention with the exception of the local crowd in and around Huntington Beach although it would gain them a record deal with Mojo Records.
Their next album titled Turn the Radio Off was met with more success by audiences who enjoyed ska music. This album would get them enough attention to begin touring in the United State and the release of the single called Sell Out would rocket them into mainstream audiences and offer them larger venues to fill. The band would enjoy their new found success only for a short time as the ska style would eventually be non existent after a very short fad of inception.
Reel Big Fish however, had gained some acclaim and would appear on the movie BASEketball in 1998, the same year that they came out with the album Why Do They Rock So Hard, which was considered a failure on all accounts by critics across the country, mainly due to the fact that the ska music style no longer was a part of the music industry. Changing their style to better conform to meet the music industry needs, the group would go on to reclaim a bit of success in 2002 when they released the single Where Have You Been? The single would feature drummer Carlos De La Garza on the songs Cheer Up but would not perform but for a very short time for the group and would leave after their concert at the House of Blues in Anaheim California in 2003.
Rocky Road
Over the next few years the group would experience hot and cold streaks as their sound would inspire some and just was not simply the ticket for others. The group would undergo some personnel changes when one member was fired for his excessive drinking habits. Their fourth studio album was released in 2005 called We’re Not Happy ‘Til You’re Not Happy and after the album fill in drummer Justin Ferreira would leave the band and was later replaced by Ryland Steen. The release of this album would prove to again be not well received by most. The album actually talks about a rock group that once was but is now upset because their time is over.
Ironically, this seemed to be the case for the band. Although the group had once gained a solidified fan base, they would be lost due to the style of music that was considered not a valid style anymore. The band would continue to play but for a more specialized crowd that was getting smaller by the show. Their record company would end up cutting ties late in the 2000’s and the band would go on to try and release another album through an independent label although it really saw no success either. One can track their upcoming events on their official website and may be able to find free music downloads on the internet.
Did You Know
The name of the group is their most hated question because they feel that the answer is very boring.
