Red Hot Chili Peppers is easily one of the most influential and original bands in recent times. The four-piece band from Los Angeles has often used the city as a muse for its music. Red Hot Chili Peppers have survived many music trends and imitators to still be a creative force to be reckoned with.
The Funkadelic Beginning
Formed in LA in 1983, by founding members Anthony Keidis (Lead singer and songwriting) and school friends Michael "Flea" Balzary (Bass) along with their friend Hillel Slovak (died of heroin overdose). The band went through several line-up changes in the first few years of formation. After EMI signed them up, the first two albums mostly funk based "Red Hot Chili Peppers" in 1984 and "Freaky Styley" in 1985 were received well only by a small cult following in the LA area. The band was still trying to define its sound. Their harder sounding third album "Uplift Mojo Party Plan" in 1987 was a minor success. By the time they released their fifth album in 1989 "Mother's Milk" the line-up was settled with Chad Smith (Drums) and wizard John Frusciante (guitar).
The Breakthrough
In 1991, the band recorded "Blood Sugar Sex Magic" in a haunted LA mansion with genius producer Rick Rubin; a genre defining album which was a massive success. Their first single, the Grammy award winning "Give it Away" was a fusion of rap, rock and funk styles with an unforgettable video. The ballad "Under the Bridge" from the same album is considered by many as one of the greatest songs of the 90s. Its soft opening chords and melancholy mood became the bands most popular song ever. The song again uses LA as a metaphor for loneliness. The album has gone to sell nearly 15 million copies world wide.
A greatest hits album followed by bad news. John Frusciante was the victim of drug excess; he abruptly quit the band leaving a lot of anguish and bad feelings behind. The break-up was a difficult one for the band and after many auditions the band reluctantly recruited Dave Navaroo for their next tour and album. One Hot Minute released in 1995 had an edgier harder rock sound. Though it was a commercial success but the friction within the band due to Dave Navarro's unpredictable personality led to the guitarist being shown the door.
Dream of Californication
In 1998, John Frusciante recovering from his addiction joined back and the band was recording a new album with their favorite producer. After a few initial problems of finding the right chemistry, Anthony Keidis always called these studio sessions as the bands defining moment. The result was a 15 million selling "Californication" released in 1999. The sound was more melodic then their previous albums, the songwriting was more precise and it explored the darker side of their city-LA, the California dream. The album yielded hit singles "Around the World", "Scar Tissue" and "Californication". The Californication world tour was widely successful, the band even played Woodstock 99.
Red Hot Around in the World
In 2002 "By the Way" was released to fantastic reviews and commercial success. Their first No.1 album spawned several hits. While the album was progressive in nature and moved away from their usual funk/rap sound; the band had made what many believed was a masterpiece. Melodic texture and classic rock riffs were the new sound of Red Hot Chili Peppers. The song writing was more uplifting and even had songs about love. It went multi-platinum and the subsequent world tour was their most successful to date. They even performed for 100,000 people at Slane Castle in Ireland which would culminate into a DVD "Live at Slane Castle".
In 2006, the band recorded the Grammy award winning double album "Stadium Arcadium". Featuring 28 songs, it debut at No.1 in UK and US. The lead single "Dani California" about a girl who lived the fast, unsettled hard life was a reflection of some the women Anthony Keidis has dated. The song was a massive hit and was performed at Wembley Stadium for the Live Earth concert. The Stadium Arcadium tour was also a phenomenal success, cementing the bands soon to be legendary status.
But as of 2009, John Frusciante has left the band again citing creative differences and wanting to focus on his solo career. The band has confirmed that tour guitarist is Josh Klinghoffer now a fulltime band member. A new album is being recorded and the plan is to release it in 2010
