Radiohead – The Alternative Rock Legends

“I think the most important thing about music is the sense of escape” – Thom Yorke

OK Radiohead!

The British band is considered one of greatest avant-garde rock artists of the last 20 years. They are true pioneers of the British alt-rock genre that has broken into a social consciousness in the US and across the world. The band has sold over 25 million albums worldwide but it is their eclectic music which stands out as rocks most innovative and artistic.. They have refused to sign with any record label  and release their music themselves either online or through a distribution network. This move is being hailed as somewhat of a revolution.

Band History

The band was formed in Oxfordshire in 1985 while attending school together. Thom Yorke as chief songwriter and vocals, guitar player Johnny Greenwood, Colin Greenwood on bass and Phil Selway on drums. The band started jamming together and even recorded some demos. The bands first EP was released in 1991 and a chance meeting with EMI record label executive led to a 6 album deal.

The Radiohead World

Radiohead released the single “Creep” which initially did not do so well but gained massive ground and was a worldwide hit. The guitar distortion by Johnny Greenwood became the signature sound of the single. The band released “Pablo Honey” in 1993 their debut album to massive critical support. The album broke them into the mainstream and has sold over 4 million copies worldwide. The band went on a North American tour largely due to the success of the single “Creep”. The second album “The Bends” was less accessible commercially though over the years has gained cult status and has sold 6 million copies worldwide.

OK Computer!

Radiohead toured for much of ’96 in between recording sessions. Their third album “OK Computer” was released to global massive acclaim in Jun 1997. The electronic rock embrace with its concept album songwriting about modern life and commercialism was their first UK No.1 album. It was also a commercial success as the album has sold nearly 10 million copies worldwide. The album’s melodic rock sound with sonic landscapes and electronic production set it apart from anything recorded in the late nineties.

Twin Peaks

In 2000 Radiohead returned with “Kid A” which debut straight into No.1 on UK and US charts. The album was pushing them towards more abstract electronic sound with very little rock guitar. “Amnesiac” in 2001 recorded during the same time as its predecessor was another No.1 album in the UK reaching No 2 on the US charts.

“Hail to the Thief” in 2003 a more political album featuring anti-Bush statements used more guitar driven sounds debut at No.1 in the UK and No.3 in the US. The album marked the end of their contractual obligation with EMI record label. They refused to sign with any other label and decided to release albums on their own. “In Rainbows” released in 2007 was available as a download and asked the consumers to pay whatever they felt was right. A revolutionary concept which might go on to change the music industry.
