Gate of the West
The rock band Puddle of Mudd was founded in the city of Kansas City in Missouri in September of 1992 with original member Kenny Burkett, Jimmy Allen, Wes Scantlin, and Sean Sammon. Inspired by the Missouri River flood, which flooded the practice space and supposedly left a Puddle of Mudd the group would go on to become solidified in alternative rock n’ roll gaining a driving fan base as they went. The group produced their first album called Stuck, was put out by V&R Records and release in 1994 of all original music.
First Album
Stuck, released in 1994, got very little attention from anything with the exception of local people who went to watch the group play at local clubs and festivals. With this bit of attention, the group was inspired to produce a second album called Abrasive on another record labels called Hardknocks Records and was released in 1997.
The sound was said to be of the grunge genre and somewhat dirty compared to what they would go on to release at later dates. By 1999, Scantlin was the only remaining member of Puddle of Mudd due to the many differing opinions of the rest of the original group. Scantlin would go on to release a demo, which was heard by Fred Durst, who would help move Scantlin to California to begin a new band.
After making some calls across the country, the group managed to scrape up enough members to form a band. They would go on to release their first album called Come Clean in August of 2001 and gained national attention from the single Control, which would go on to be used by the WWE for their Survivor Series of 2001.
The second single called Blurry, would go on to be the band’s most successful single of the present as it reached the number five position on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as number eight in the UK. Their last single of the album She Hates Me was another hit that charted to number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100.
Making Ground
From this new found success, the band embarked on a European tour with the band Godsmack as well as the Family Values Tour of 2001, which featured Linkin Park, Stone Temple Pilots and Staind. The album would eventually go on to be certified platinum and go on to sell over five million copies.
After extensive touring, the band went back to the studio to create their next album Life On Display that contained three more hit singles such as Away From Me and Heel Over Head. Although the album had three solid singles, the album did not fare nearly as well as their debut album and some have attributed this lack of success when their drummer moved on to bigger and better things midway through recording the album.
Undeterred, Puddle of Mudd went into the studio for a third time to create the album Famous that had the single Psycho, which gained copious airplay and was heralded by the many fans of the group.
Present Day
The group would go on to release one more album in 2009 that has not gained much acclaim although the band still holds on to its solid fan base. The group has been constantly touring in support of the album, which has managed some decent sales although not near as many as the previous albums.
The fans of the band can find up to date information on their web site as well as free music downloads or internet screening of some of their singles. Tour dates and new things to come will also be listed on this web site, which can be accessed twenty four hours a day.
Did You Know
Puddle of Mudd has often been confused with a Christian based rock group.
Puddle of Mudd’s original name has been rumored to be a spin off from the band Cradle of Filth.
