In high school, Prince would join up with fellow mates in a band they would call Grand Central. This was the start of his career in music although the band would not get any real acclaim with the exception of making the members popular in high school. It would not be until 1976 when Prince would make his first demo that he would start his professional music. At the age of seventeen, Nelsons was signed to Warner Brothers after producing his second EP. He would then move to Sausalito California to begin his studio recordings in which he signed deal with Warner Brothers for a total of three albums.

He would then go on to create a band in 1979 and would eventually release the self titled album later that year. The album would reach number four on the Billboard charts and number twenty two on the Billboard 200. It would later be certified as platinum. This would be the beginning to a long career in the music industry where Prince would change their styles many times to meet the growing needs of their large fan base.

The group would produce their album called Dirty Mind, which would contain the hit single Uptown that would go to number four on the billboard charts. He would also become one of the first African American artists to be featured on MTV, along with Michael Jackson.
In the mid 1980’s he would release his more popular album called Purple Rain which would sell over thirteen million copies in the United States. The album would contain numerous hits.
